Can my dog be off-leash in open areas and sleep outside?

Some dogs cannot go off leash outside. I would keep her on a leash until you can have the fence installed in the summer. Once the fence is installed you can work with her a lot easier to try to get her to listen to come back to you when called. My concern would be that she would run and get hit by a car, attacked by another animal or run after someone (even if she would never hurt them it can still scare someone). I would try to get a trainer to work with you now since she is so young. If you have a trainer and are consistent you may be able to have her off the leash one day. Being able to be trusted off leash is a skill that must be trained. You can't expect a dog of any breed to have this capability inherently. If you get a puppy or an older dog and you really desire to have it be trusted off leash, you'll need to get the help of a good trainer to do so.

If Ginger isn't reliable off leash she shouldn't be allowed to be off leash for her own safety. If you don't have a fenced yard but still want to let her run around, a long leash of about 20-30 feet can allow her to run around while still giving you control to stop her. You can also use this length of leash to solidify recall commands and teach boundaries. An electric underground fence may also be beneficial to help teach boundaries without an above-ground fence present.

This is a training process that you need to do with her, you need to teach her to stay near you on command, this is usually done based on a reward system (treats) but it can take quite a long time to achieve this, when you are training her she should still be on the lead of course.

I would not recommend taking a dog off leash when in a public area, ever, to be honest. You never know when a strange dog will run up, Noble could get distracted and run into a street, find and eat something that he shouldn't, etc. He will be much safer and healthier in the long-run staying on a leash. Teaching him a strong "heel" and requiring him to walk next to you are also good behavior things to work on.

Hi and thanks for your question. Maggie is quite young to be trusted off leash just yet. I would definitely recommend keeping her on the leash to go potty until she is fully trained and into her adult years. Most pets aren't fully trained until they are closer to 12 months of age. You also will ensure that she is mature enough to handle being off leash. It is best to be safe than sorry.

Pups should not be away from their mother and siblings until at least 8-10weeks of age to ensure they are fully weaned, have received at least one vaccination and have had an appropriate amount of socialisation with their litter mates and mother, early separation increases anxiety and aggression in many cases. HE should be fed a high quality puppy food and fresh water to drink 15-18months to ensure optimal development and to reduce the risk of growth deformities and joint disease. Be sure to deworm him regularly. The age at which he can be left in an outdoor enclosure depends on your local climate - your local vets office would be best placed to advise on local risk factors for both climate, vaccination schedules and parasite prevention (including ticks) - I recommend you call in and have a chat with them before you bring any puppy home
