Why does my dog's runny nose keep returning after antibiotics?

This could be a fungal infection or an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection. If bacterial and fungal cultures have not yet been performed, I would recommend that you request them. Yes I would schedule a recheck if the discharge is still brown or yellow and hasn't started to resolve after a few days of antibiotics and other medications as it is possible there is something stuck in the nose causing irritation, or the infection requires more targeted medications. I would also make sure to keep Fray eating and drinking. You can also clear away any nasal discharge that is crusting around the nose to help keep it easier for her to breathe.

It would be unlikely that the antibiotics are the cause of her sneezing and breathing issue. She could have allergies, an infection, foreign body in her nose, etc. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may be able to prescribe an anti-histamine to see if that helps. If not, she should be rechecked by your vet to determine the cause and treat.

It’s possible that he’s got rhinitis, which can be caused by an allergic type reaction, an infection, or even an auto-immune type condition where the nasal passages become inflamed for no reason. A foreign body (such as a grass seed) would also be possible, as would a nasal tumor. A rhinoscopy (scope of the nose) and biopsy may be needed for a diagnosis and to determine the best treatments. This must be really frustrating for you! Since four different antibiotics did not improve Skye's condition, I would think that her nasal discharge is either not due to bacterial causes or is a highly antibiotic resistant bacterium. Other causes of nasal discharge can include fungal infections, viruses, masses in the nasal cavity, presence of foreign material (I once saw carpet fibers cause nasal issues!), etc. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any at home remedies that will help Skye. At this point, I would recommend having your vet recheck her and consider x-rays or a nasal culture as the next diagnostic steps.

I think you need to get a second opinion from another vet, preferably one who has a rhinoscope and can actually look into your dog's upper respiratory passages. By examining the nasal passages with a rhinoscope one will be able to see whether there is a tumor present or more plant debris or foreign material that may need to be removed and so stop the constant infections and bleeding. Your vet may be able to refer you to a relevant clinic.
