My dog ripped his dew claw nail. What will the vet do and cost?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 79 lbs

Hello, i'm taking Otto into vet tomorrow as he ripped off his "dew claw" nail totally with quick and nerve ending exposed. Bothering him, not healing over even with dressed bandage as meaty nerve ending exposed. My question is what should I expect for vet costs roughly and what would they do for him?

It can take awhile for a torn toenail to grow back, but I think it's a good idea to have Otto examined if he seems painful. It is nearly impossible to say how much the visit would cost - veterinary services can vary widely depending on your area and even hospitals close to each other can have different costs for services. Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination and could either recommend pain medication and continued bandaging if the nail looks okay, or might recommend sedation to clean the nail area, antibiotics, pain medication or even x-rays if there are concerns about the appearance of the nail base. I often recommend a cone or e-collar as well to prevent licking. You could always call your vet in the morning and ask about the cost of a physical exam, and then request an estimate for recommended tests and treatments once your vet has a chance to see the nail.

    Unfortunately, the nail looks like it will need to be cut back. It's broken down to the quick and will likely continue to cause pain and discomfort until it's removed. Barrett is going to need to see the vet. They can also prescribe pain medication to make him more comfortable.

I think it would be best if you take him to the vet for a wound clean-up, and exam whether there is more than just a stripped nail. Your veterinarian will likely want to bandage the paw and give your dog pain medicine and an antibiotic so that the bacteria in that area cannot cause an infection.

Poor Coco! You will need to take her into the vet to have the nail cut, the area cleaned, and antibiotics as well as pain medication prescribed. The exam visit alone will likely be between $45-$55, but if they need to sedate her, that will be an additional cost as well as the medications. The vet can give you an estimate when they see her. It sounds like he broke his dewclaw - most of the time the nail will need to be removed so it won't cause chronic irritation or infection. If you're unable to pull it off at home because he is too painful or because it is still attached you will need to see your veterinarian. Sometimes sedation is required if the nail is not completely broken and the nail is clipped very close to the base. If Otis seems comfortable and the nail is not bleeding this is not necessarily an emergency - you could wait until your vet is open and make an appointment. You should keep him from licking the area until then and he may need to wear an e-collar.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Max! if you are referring the the "thumb" nail that is the dew claw. If they tear or break that nail, the treatment is to cut it back to the pink vein or quick. If the nail has already been torn off to the pink vein and there isn't any residual nail hanging off then bandaging it for 3-5 days should be enough. Sometimes we do prescribe oral antibiotics and pain medications. The nail will grow back, which is a slow process. If there is still nail hanging on then it should be cut back as that is a constant source of pain. I wish Max the best!

My dog's dew claw is injured and dangly. Can I wait to see the vet?
I think as long as you schedule a visit on Monday Bertie should be okay. I'd recommend getting a E-collar to prevent Bertie from licking the nail as this may result in infection. You can also soak the foot in a diluted chlorohexidine or diluted iodine solution and then rinse thoroughly. If Bertie stops eating, acts lethargic, starts limping, or is obsessively trying to lick the nail then it would be better to get him to a veterinarian sooner. If he remains otherwise normal I think you are okay in waiting until Monday. Torn nails can be pretty painful, but please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need a prescription from a vet for pain meds. My dog's nail is torn and bent at 90 degrees. What should I do?
I would suggest a vet visit for Rev. These broken nails can be extremely painful. The vet office may sedate him and/or give pain meds then cut the nail flush to the paw pad. Many of these need a few days of pain medication as well. Be sure not give otc pain medications to dogs.
