My dog's ingrown nail is red and swollen. What should I do and cost?

The only thing that can relieve this is to have the nail cut at the level of the break, this needs to be done by your vet. the cutting itself should not cost more than 20$ but in some cases it needs to be done under sedation which could cost 50-70$.

This will depend on the veterinarian and the location of the veterinary office.. The vet will likely charge an exam , cutting the nail, and , depending on whether there is an infection or not, some antibiotics.

It can take awhile for a torn toenail to grow back, but I think it's a good idea to have Otto examined if he seems painful. It is nearly impossible to say how much the visit would cost - veterinary services can vary widely depending on your area and even hospitals close to each other can have different costs for services. Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination and could either recommend pain medication and continued bandaging if the nail looks okay, or might recommend sedation to clean the nail area, antibiotics, pain medication or even x-rays if there are concerns about the appearance of the nail base. I often recommend a cone or e-collar as well to prevent licking. You could always call your vet in the morning and ask about the cost of a physical exam, and then request an estimate for recommended tests and treatments once your vet has a chance to see the nail.

Just like you indicated, this could be due to a foreign body getting stuck in the digit though other things like a deep infection or even a growth cannot be ruled out. It could even be secondary to her licking at it. For this reason, it is important to rule those out. I recommend a visit to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They will cut the nail, remove it from the pad, clean the wound with antiseptic and probably prescribe an antibiotic and a pain medication. After that, I recommend frequent nail trims (every 2-4 weeks for long nails) to help prevent this from happening. Best wishes to you and Dexter!

Ouch, poor pup! The nail will have to be cut, but if it's growing into her paw, it may be too painful for you to cut it. Sometimes dogs who have painful nails will not let their owners cut them, and they will have to be sedated by the vet in order to get it done. You can try to cut the nail yourself, and if you are successful, you will need to clean her pad afterwards with an antiseptic soap and warm water. The next day, you can do an epsom salt and warm bath soak with her paw twice a day, and do that for a couple of days. Keep an eye on the area, and if you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, the area is infected and she will need to see a vet for antibiotics. If Bellas doesn't let you cut the nail, I would take her into the vet first thing during normal business hours today or tomorrow so that your vet can cut it for you and clean the area. Don't feed her the night before in case they need to sedate her to get her nail cut.
