My new puppy has ringworm. Will I get infected if I touch him?

Poor puppy. I can understand how this can be worrisome especially since you haven't even brought him home yet. But it is a good thing that the breeder is at least taking responsibility for the infection and treating it before you take him home with you. The breeder should be aware to separate the affected puppy from the others so that they did it doesn't get spread around. If the breeder follow simple hygiene instructions and isolating this puppy then the reader should be able to get this under control within 3 to 6 weeks. But most importantly you want to make sure that the puppy does well on the medication and has no side effects and is clear of any skin lesions before you adopt him. I would highly advise isolation in this case but I will tell you this, even shed hairs are contagious so direct contact is NOT needed to spread ringworm. Ringworm should be treated for at 1-2 months after all lesions are gone. I would retest Taco for ringworm to make sure it is completely cleared before integrating him. Good luck Also, ringworm is a Zoonotic disease meaning humans can catch it from dogs. Small children and the elderly, especially shouldn't have contact with him during the time of treatment.

It sounds like the breeder you may be dealing with might be irresponsible. I would probably shy away from this person and look or another breeder that can produce vaccination records and health certificates. There are a lot of breeders out there whose sole purpose is to make money and have no concern for the health of the dogs or the betterment of the breed. Sometimes you have to sift through those folks before you find the right person. In regards to this specific puppy, the only way to know if ring worm is no longer contagious is with a negative culture. If they have not done this, and the owner is not having good practices at home, I would not assume that everything is OK. Hope this helps.

Ringworm is highly contagious to Guinea Pigs and seems to be able to spread easily with minimal contact, but strict hygiene is effective for preventing transmission. Considering that Sebastian did not have direct contact with the ringworm lesion, and you recently washed your hands, the risk of spreading this to him is very low. Diligently use the ointment and do not stop using it until at least two weeks after all signs of the fungus are gone.

I would take him into the vet to get the antifungal medication prescribed. I would avoid touching that spot, and don't let him sleep in the bed.
