Puppy ringworm: Are these signs of a bad breeder or will he recover?

Poor puppy. I can understand how this can be worrisome especially since you haven't even brought him home yet. But it is a good thing that the breeder is at least taking responsibility for the infection and treating it before you take him home with you. The breeder should be aware to separate the affected puppy from the others so that they did it doesn't get spread around. If the breeder follow simple hygiene instructions and isolating this puppy then the reader should be able to get this under control within 3 to 6 weeks. But most importantly you want to make sure that the puppy does well on the medication and has no side effects and is clear of any skin lesions before you adopt him. You are right to question this. While I can't make a ringworm diagnosis based on visual exam, I can say that Momo has a text-book-looking ringworm lesion. You might consider having your own vet do a pre-purchase exam. You can ask the breeder to send the records. If it turns out that the breeder in not be honest, then that would be a big clue to walk away from this deal. Breeders definitely don't have the best reputations, so I think an independent evaluation is always a good idea. You should also make sure she has received her vaccines and deworming. Routine cleaning and disinfecting the environment during treatment (as described in the link below) is crucial to stop the spread of the organism and to prevent reinfection. You need to isolate the puppy only if you have other pets so they don't catch the ringworm too. You guys should wear gloves and wash your hands throughly after you handle the puppy. Great question! Ringworm is highly contagious. I would recommend using gloves when handling him and washing your hands well after. I would also recommend long sleeves and washing your clothes after handling him. With good hygiene you should be ok but I would take all precautions. Hi there! For ringworm we often treat for 30 days, depending on the veterinarian's choice and how bad the infection is. You will probably not be able to get a prescription without seeing a new doctor unless you can get you're other doctor to fax a previous prescription. If they did not prescribe you anymore, your doctor may want to see if your puppy improves with little treatment. You will have to get ahold of the original prescription before you can do anything else unless you want to see another dr (probably ER on the weekends) to see if the doctor thinks you need more.

I would have this checked by a vet. It sounds very much like ringworm. Although the name suggests otherwise, ringworm is not caused by a worm at all-but a fungus. This highly contagious infection can lead to patchy areas of hair loss on a pet, and can spread to other animals-and to humans, too. Classic symptoms of ringworm include lesions that typically appear on a pet’s head, ears, paws and forelimbs. These lesions can cause patchy, crusted circular “bald spots” that sometimes look red in the center. In mild cases of ringworm, there may be just a few broken hairs, while bad cases of ringworm can spread over most of a pet’s body. The lesion on Chance's face could be due to ringworm, mange, or a bacterial skin infection. The only way to differentiate between these conditions is with diagnostic testing. Since ringworm and one type of mange (Sarcoptic mange) are contagious to people and other pets, I recommend taking Chance to his vet. The vet will be able to perform a fungal culture (to check for ringworm), a skin scrape (to look for the mites causing mange), and a skin cytology (to look for bacteria).
