I have ringworm. Can my guinea pig get it even if I washed my hands?

Ringworm is highly contagious and you can get it from animals, but I've personally never heard of ringworm leading to a massive infection. Keep in mind, though, that I'm not a human doctor so I can't comment on this. It's certainly possible your dad got the ringworm from them, but I can't say whether or not that lead to the infection. Hi there! As ringworm is a fungus, they can contract it from other guinea pigs, from humans, or from contaminated objects, such as bedding. Symptoms of ringworm in guinea pigs are usually bald spots around the ears, neck, and face that can spread along the rest of the body. They can also have crusty, flaky lesions in the middle. If you suspect that your guinea pig has ringworm, I strongly suggest taking preventative measures when handling him or her - good handwashing is essential as ringworm can be transmitted to humans. A visit to the vet is also in order - they will likely take a small sample of your GP's hair to culture for the fungus. They may also use a type of black light called a Woods lamp to examine his or her skin as the ringworm fungus usually fluoresces. If your GP does have ringworm, the vet will likely prescribe a topical or oral antifungal, or a combination of the two. There are other skin conditions that can cause bald spots as well, such as mites, that the vet can also check for. Good luck, and I hope that your piggy gets well soon!

Guinea pigs can get ringworm so they would be at risk. Ringworm is treated topically with things like miconazole when the lesions are small and uncomplicated, or with oral medications like itraconazole. Essential oils would not work and I would not recommend them.

First of all, ringworm is highly contagious. If this is a classroom pet I strongly suggest you don't let any children handle Clover until this has cleared up. Ringworm can take months to completely clear but I would say the average is ~4-6 weeks. Number two, you need to be careful putting medications near an eye. Most topical medications are toxic to ocular tissues. If the medication gets in the eye you will end up with a worse problem. Ringworm is not deadly so I don't think you need to return him but you should consider getting him to a vet for an actual diagnosis. Right now you are just guessing that it is ringworm and while that is the most likely diagnosis it is not the only possibility. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Most likely this crusty, dry appearance to the ear is due to ringworm. I suggest you get Sebastian to your vet for an exam so they can confirm and make sure you have the correct medication for treatment. Guinea pigs often get ringworm, so I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian and discuss testing and possibly treating for ringworm. Great question! Ringworm is highly contagious. I would recommend using gloves when handling him and washing your hands well after. I would also recommend long sleeves and washing your clothes after handling him. With good hygiene you should be ok but I would take all precautions.
