Puppy has ringworm, newborn at home. How to prevent spread & isolate?

Hello, once the ringworm has cleared up, they should not be shedding it persistently. However, you need to make sure that you've also cleaned your environment by washing all bedding and clothing Snickers used 2-3 times weekly. Vacuuming and cleaning all surfaces that snickers frequented in the same frequency as the ringworm fungus can live in the environment for a long time. You should prevent the puppies and mom from being around these areas until you have cleaned thoroughly. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor puppy. I can understand how this can be worrisome especially since you haven't even brought him home yet. But it is a good thing that the breeder is at least taking responsibility for the infection and treating it before you take him home with you. The breeder should be aware to separate the affected puppy from the others so that they did it doesn't get spread around. If the breeder follow simple hygiene instructions and isolating this puppy then the reader should be able to get this under control within 3 to 6 weeks. But most importantly you want to make sure that the puppy does well on the medication and has no side effects and is clear of any skin lesions before you adopt him. I hope that all goes well and that you were able to bring your puppy home soon ringworm free.

Great question! Ringworm is highly contagious. I would recommend using gloves when handling him and washing your hands well after. I would also recommend long sleeves and washing your clothes after handling him. With good hygiene you should be ok but I would take all precautions. Congratulations on your upcoming adoption of Daisy! Since you have no other pets and she has not already contaminated your apartment, keeping her contained to a small and easily cleaned area - such as a bathroom - would be ideal. It is recommended to use a diluted bleach solution to clean the infected room 1-2 times per week to prevent reinfection. Treatment for ringworm can last several months and should be continued until she has had three negative fungal cultures. It sounds as though Daisy has been well cared for with respect to her treatment, and it may just take a bit of tough love on your part to keep her confined to the bathroom for at least the next few weeks. I would highly advise isolation in this case but I will tell you this, even shed hairs are contagious so direct contact is NOT needed to spread ringworm. Ringworm should be treated for at 1-2 months after all lesions are gone. I would retest Taco for ringworm to make sure it is completely cleared before integrating him. Good luck Also, ringworm is a Zoonotic disease meaning humans can catch it from dogs. Small children and the elderly, especially shouldn't have contact with him during the time of treatment.

Both diseases are easily transmitted, so you will run the risk of spreading the diseases if you don't keep them separated. However, it's likely that they have all been exposed already, so separating them may not be necessary. Unfortunately, there is no way to know for sure and the safest bet is to separate them. The coccidia is readily eliminated with treatment, but the ringworm often takes a few weeks and sometimes months before it is completely killed with treatment. Ideally, the ringworm pup should be isolated until the infection is confirmed negative by your vet. I understand the concern of isolating the poor pup though and I think the lack of social activity is a significant concern - especially if it's weeks of being isolated. I wouldn't think it wrong to let the pups play/interact with eachother as long as you understand the risk and take some precautions. If you do decide to take that risk, then you can minimize it by giving them all a bath with antifungal shampoo at the same time as you would normally bathe Lexi. Hi there! For ringworm we often treat for 30 days, depending on the veterinarian's choice and how bad the infection is. You will probably not be able to get a prescription without seeing a new doctor unless you can get you're other doctor to fax a previous prescription. If they did not prescribe you anymore, your doctor may want to see if your puppy improves with little treatment. You will have to get ahold of the original prescription before you can do anything else unless you want to see another dr (probably ER on the weekends) to see if the doctor thinks you need more.
