What's this red spot on my dog's chin? Can I put Neosporin on it?

There is a red spot on my dog's chin. What could this be? Can I put neosporin on it?

Hello, sorry to hear about Jackie. It looks like he has some lip pyoderma. It would be ideal to put neosporin on it, however, dogs tend to lick this medication and ingestion of it could cause side effects.

You could clean the area with skin sensitive baby wipes. If the area does not resolve within 3-5 days, then she may need to have oral antibiotics. Occasionally, this can occur secondary to allergies.

Monitor the area for worsening, if you note any, then contact your veterinarian to have him evaluated. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I agree that it looks like a hotspot but without seeing it in person I cannot say for sure. I would try giving her Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. See link below. I would also spray it with Benadryl spray. I bet she is scratch it more than you think. If she truly isn't, then this could be something more serious like mange. I probably wouldn't put any cream or ointment on it as we want it to dry out not stay moist. If she isn't improving, I would have your vet take a look. Your vet will be able to get her on the proper meds plus stronger allergy meds if needed. I hope this helps !

that is a very good medicated shampoo that is safe to use and work well for redness and hair loss. Unfortunately that spot is very hard to treat with topical because she will be able to lick it off and no medicine is likely to stay. Your best bet is to keep the area clean and change her to glass or stainless steel bowls. If it does not start to dry up and get a scab then I would have your vet check the area to see if oral medications are needed

Did you mean to have a picture attached to your question? If so, unfortunately there was not one attached. Puppies often get “pimples/pustules. This is usually a skin infection called puppy pyoderma. However, other problems such as a bug bite are possible as well. A Small amount of neosporin is unlikely to cause any harm at this time. Most mild Cases of pyoderma will resolve on their own or with a medicated shampo. However more significant cases need antibiotic therapy. I would recommend that you monitor the area close for any change or other pustules to appear. If it doesn’t resolve in the next few days then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

My dog has a blister or injury on her lower lip. What is it?

Poor Chico! It is difficult to tell exactly what it is without seeing it in person. I would watch it closely. You can put an over the counter antibiotic ointment like Neosporin or something similar to see if it will help. If it doesn't look better within 24 hours, I would have your vet take a look at it. Your vet will be able to tell exactly what it is and the best treatment to help it heal. I hope this helps!

Dog has pink spot under chin, now a new one. Is it an infection?

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

What cream can I use for my dog's open lip wound and body sores?

There is no cream recommend to be put in a spot near his lip since he will just lick it off. If there are sores on his body you can alternate antibiotic cream such as neosporin with cortisone cream. You can also give him a good bath to help the skin. I would have the spot on the jaw line checked to make sure there is no growth that may be cancer or no immune mediated skin problem as these may need a biopsy or or oral medication to clear

Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain, discharge, and loss of function so if you notice this getting worse or other signs develop, take him back to have him re-evaluated. You can use some topical Neosporin or similar antibiotic ointment on the incision. Just make sure if doesn't contain hydrocortisone or a steroid. Good luck

What causes my dog's swollen, pussing lip sores and blisters?

Lesions like this can be related to acne, folliculitis or allergies. Typically this does respond to antibiotics but if allergies are the issue, the condition can reoccur. Dogs breeds with heavy jowls/lips are more prone to this condition. Washing all the food/water dishes and all chew toys once a week can help. Your veterinarian may also carry medicated wipes the clean the area daily. Lastly, if allergies are suspected, Jax may need a special diet or even blood testing to determine the offending allergen.
