Adopted dog has a chin sore. When should I see a vet or use Neosporin?

Hello, sorry to hear about Jackie. It looks like he has some lip pyoderma. It would be ideal to put neosporin on it, however, dogs tend to lick this medication and ingestion of it could cause side effects. You could clean the area with skin sensitive baby wipes. If the area does not resolve within 3-5 days, then she may need to have oral antibiotics. Occasionally, this can occur secondary to allergies. Monitor the area for worsening, if you note any, then contact your veterinarian to have him evaluated. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Not seeing the sore, this would depend on the size of the sore. If it is a small one, up to 1/4 inch, you can just put some neosporin on it and monitor it and make sure it heals. If it does not start healing within a day or two or if it is getting bigger or if it is leaking pus or bleeding, then I suggest you have your veterinarian examine it.

Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain, discharge, and loss of function so if you notice this getting worse or other signs develop, take him back to have him re-evaluated. You can use some topical Neosporin or similar antibiotic ointment on the incision. Just make sure if doesn't contain hydrocortisone or a steroid. Good luck

Did you mean to have a picture attached to your question? If so, unfortunately there was not one attached. Puppies often get “pimples/pustules. This is usually a skin infection called puppy pyoderma. However, other problems such as a bug bite are possible as well. A Small amount of neosporin is unlikely to cause any harm at this time. Most mild Cases of pyoderma will resolve on their own or with a medicated shampo. However more significant cases need antibiotic therapy. I would recommend that you monitor the area close for any change or other pustules to appear. While this may be caused by a bite from another dog, from my experience, this looks a little bit more like a wound from nudging something constantly with the nose. Perhaps nudging a door to a crate, or sticking his nose under a door repeatedly. I recommend keeping a close eye on the area, and maybe even getting Bear an E-collar or "cone" so that he does not cause further trauma to the area. I advise against applying antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin as Bear is likely to lick them off quickly. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bear!

I think applying a triple antibiotic like Neosporin twice daily for 7-10 days would be a good idea. This may make Zelda to be itchy. For this reason, if you notice her scratching at her head, use an e-collar to prevent self-trauma as that may delay healing. Otherwise, this should heal well shortly. Good luck and have a great day!

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid rubbing/scratching if any.
