My dog has red eyes but seems fine. Is a vet visit necessary?

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 89 lbs

Both of my dogs eyes are almost completely red where the white should be. Is this something I HAVE to take my dog to the vet for? He doesnt squint or seem to be bothered by it. We’re strapped for cash and I don’t want to spend a bunch of money for something that will heal on its own.

I am so sorry to hear that Harvey is experiencing these problems with his eyes. Thank you for providing an excellent picture, it seems red and has discharge. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Harvey to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected or injured it is likely painful, this will prompt Harvey to scratch or rub his eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration.

Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have him examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian.

Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort.

    Poor Beansy! I would immediately take him to the vet. That's because the eye is such a delicate and important structure, and any problem with it should be checked out right away by a vet. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Beansy could have an eye infection, allergies, or suffering trauma to his eye. The vet can diagnose what's wrong with his eye so he can be treated. I'd take him into the vet right away, good luck!

I am sorry to hear this! His eye does look very irritated- and the area around his eye that has a 'cobblestone' appearance suggests that he has some chronic irritation. I would want to rule out a few things that cause these signs including stray eyelashes that are 'ingrown', eyelid abnormalities, allergies and mites. The good news is that most of these things can be treated successfully! I would bring him in and have a few eye tests done and have them closely examined with magnification (sometimes an ophthalmologist is recommended) and see what kind of treatment plan is needed. Until you can bring him in, over the counter lubricating eye drops may bring some short term relief. I hope this helps!

My dog's eye is suddenly red, swollen, and leaking. Is it serious?
Hello, poor Cooper that looks painful!!! He has quite a bit of red around his scleral and the conjunctiva of the lower eye lid appears to have a hematoma (bleeding) or chemosis (swelling). I looks as though he may have bumped his eye into something. However, some of these signs can also occur with an eye infection, corneal ulcer, or foreign body. Cooper will likely need at least some pain medications to keep him comfortable while the swelling goes down. He may also need to have his eye stained to check for an ulcer and eye ointments to treat for an eye infection. It would be best to have a veterinarian examine his eye sooner than later. Deep ulcers can progress quite quickly without medical management. Any ulcer or foreign body can be quite painful. If you think however, Cooper is comfortable and isn't showing any signs of pain (squinting, rubbing eye, or being lethargic) then you may monitor the redness at home to see if this gets better. Ouch! Poor Archie. If Archie is squinting, rubbing, or having redness in the affected eye, he should be seen by a vet today. These signs can indicate a corneal ulcer or abrasion as a result of the trauma. However, if he does not seem bothered by the eye and the discharge is improving, you can continue monitoring it for changes through the weekend. In the meantime, out an Elizabethan collar or cone on Archie to prevent any further damage. Avoid putting anything in the eye, but you can use warm water to clean the discharge from under his eye.

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. My dog has red, squinting eyes and seems to be in pain. What to do?
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Milo. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. Both of his third eyelids appear to be elevated and the squinting can indicate that his eyes are painful. He could have a scratch across the surface of his eye, inflammation within the eye itself or an infection. In other cases the eyes are not making adequate tears making them very dry and painful. Based on his exam findings, eye tests may be necessary to determine the best course of treatment. In the meantime, keep the eyes free of any discharge and do not allow him to paw at them. Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. In the meantime, keep a close eye (no pun intended) on Dodi, and give your vet a call in the morning. I hope Dodi's eyes clear up soon! Best regards,
