My dog has red, squinting eyes and seems to be in pain. What to do?

From these pictures, Milos eyes seem normal. However, if you are concerned you can have your veterinarian perform an ophthalmic exam to be sure there is no problem. With regard to the diarrhea, this could be due to a bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection or it could mean that Milo ate something he should not have eaten. You can try putting Milo on a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice for a few days. However, if the diarrhea does not resolve, you will need to have him examined by your veterinarian.

Hello, The constant closing of the eye is called a "blepharospasm" and is often a pain induced reflex to keep the eye closed. Dogs also often show pain by becoming less active and interested in food. I'm concerned that what is going on with Spike is painful and that is causing his change in behavior. I would recommend taking him into a vet to be seen and find out what exactly is going on with his eye. They will likely recommend a trio of three basic eye tests, which can diagnose most of the eye diseases that affects our pets. The first one is called a fluoroscein stain, which is a dye that can tell us if there is any ulcers (scratches or defects) in the cornea, the outermost layer of the eye.. A tonometry test measures the pressures of the eye globe to rule out a couple of diseases called glaucoma or uveitis. A schirmer tear test can measure the tear production of the eye, as lack of tear production is another common cause of eye disease in dogs. I am sorry to hear this! His eye does look very irritated- and the area around his eye that has a 'cobblestone' appearance suggests that he has some chronic irritation. I would want to rule out a few things that cause these signs including stray eyelashes that are 'ingrown', eyelid abnormalities, allergies and mites. The good news is that most of these things can be treated successfully! I would bring him in and have a few eye tests done and have them closely examined with magnification (sometimes an ophthalmologist is recommended) and see what kind of treatment plan is needed. Until you can bring him in, over the counter lubricating eye drops may bring some short term relief. I hope this helps!

Hello, and thank you for your question. Monty's eye looks very concerning for possible glaucoma, uveitis (eye inflammation), or endothelial disease. I would strongly recommend getting him seen by the vet as soon as possible, as there is a risk of perforation of the eye if this is due to glaucoma. The vet can check the pressures inside the eye, and prescribe medications to help reduce pressure or inflammation. In the meantime, ensure that Monty does not scratch or rub his eye as it is very sensitive and may be prone to being perforated. An e-collar (cone) may help with this purpose. I am sorry to see that Tank’s eye is abnormal. The squinting and elevated third eyelid and slight swelling concerns me about the possibility of a scratch to the eyeball, however that can not be diagnosed with a picture. If the eye is still squinting and painful tomorrow then he needs to be seen by a veterinarian. If the eye does have a scratch it should be treated with antibiotics to prevent an infection and further chance of damage to the eye. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Draco. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He may have an eye infection or even a scratch across the surface of his eye. He sounds painful given that he is pawing at it and seeking extra attention. He will likely need some eye tests for the doctor to make an accurate diagnosis. From there treatment can be prescribed. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him to prevent further damage from pawing. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Moo is adorable, but his eyes certainly seem uncomfortable given his squinting! Squinting is a sign of eye pain in dogs. Coupled with the yellow/green discharge, it is concerning that he may have an eye infection, corneal ulcer or uveitis (inflammation within the eyes). Allergies may be contributing, but the yellow/green discharge makes me suspicious that there is another issue present. If his eyes are itchy at all, make sure that Moo wears an e-collar (cone) until you can take him to the vet today or tomorrow to prevent further eye injury. I hope that all goes well!
