My dog's eye is red and watery. What should I do to help my dog?

I am sorry to hear this! His eye does look very irritated- and the area around his eye that has a 'cobblestone' appearance suggests that he has some chronic irritation. I would want to rule out a few things that cause these signs including stray eyelashes that are 'ingrown', eyelid abnormalities, allergies and mites. The good news is that most of these things can be treated successfully! I would bring him in and have a few eye tests done and have them closely examined with magnification (sometimes an ophthalmologist is recommended) and see what kind of treatment plan is needed. Until you can bring him in, over the counter lubricating eye drops may bring some short term relief. I hope this helps!

Poor Rowan! It looks like he is having an allergic reaction, has developed conjunctivitis or injured his eyes somehow. I would give him some Benadryl and put a cone collar on his head so he doesn't rub them and make them worse. You can also flush them with some eye irrigating solution or artificial tears. If they aren't improving or getting worse, I would have your vet take a look at them He may need antibiotics or steroid eye drops to make them better. I would not use any medicated eye drops unless directed by your vet as some can actually make certain eye conditions worse if used improperly. I hope this helps.

You can get a saline eye wash to clean his eyes but if his eyes are red and watery he may have an infection or allergies. In that case, he should be examined by a vet for treatment. He may need an antibiotic, antihistamine, or corticosteroid to help treat his problem.

Just keep washing the eyes out with the Microcynah 2-3 times per day until the appointment. That is perfect to use. If you are really worried you could always opt to take him to a different vet for an appointment.

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. My dog's eye is red, gunky, and showing its third eyelid. What to do?

Hi. The white part coming from his lower eye lid that you are seeing is Speck's third eyelid. When the eye is irritated or injured the third eyelid may be more prominent and noticeable. You can gently clean around his eye with a soft cloth and warm water to remove any discharge or any topical allergens. He may have some irritation due to allergies or dust. If he is squinting, holding the eye closed, rubbing it or otherwise acting painful he should be evaluated by his vet. They can look for any foreign body around the eye or may stain the eye to make sure Speck doesn't have a scratch or ulcer. Do not use human OTC eye drops in his eyes.

My dog has red eyes but seems fine. Is a vet visit necessary?

I am so sorry to hear that Harvey is experiencing these problems with his eyes. Thank you for providing an excellent picture, it seems red and has discharge. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Harvey to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected or injured it is likely painful, this will prompt Harvey to scratch or rub his eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have him examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. My dog has a watery eye and inflamed eyelid. What should I do?

It is really hard to say for sure. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good exam. Since it is her eyes that are affected it is important to make sure she does not need medications/eye drops to resolve the issue. If it is related to allergies you can try an over the counter anti histamine and possibly place a warm compress on the eyes 2 times a day to help remove debris and decrease inflammation. My dog's red eyelid is irritated from allergies. What can I put on it?

The red spot on the outside lower lid looks like a scratch or abrasions that will leave a scab. It is best to get it seen by a vet as antibiotics that are safe for the eye may be needed to clear the eyelids and the scab. Allergies may the starting cause and the more he rubs it, the worse it may get. You can try some benadryl to help with redness and the itching. Apply a warm compress and flushing the eye with saline eye wash may also help provide comfort.
