My dog's eye is red & squinting. Should I give him old Prednisone?

A cloudy eye can be caused by many conditions, i am surprised your vet prescribed Steroids only- without any antibiotic drops as it is impossible to rule out an eye infection just by looking at the eye. my first choice of treatment would have been an antibiotic drop rather than steroids.

It is difficult to give advice without actually seeing the eye. You are welcome to post again with a photo if you'd like. That being said, as long as she is not pawing at the eye, scratching at it or squinting then you can probably wait until your vet opens again to take her for a recheck exam. Continue to put the medications in as prescribed. If you are noticing squinting or that the eye is actually bothering her then you need to get her to a vet ASAP for an exam. Hope this helps. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory at low doses. If your vet suspects allergies as the cause the pred will help. Also the pred may help with rubbing or scratching of the eyes. Allergies are hard to “cure” if the underlyin cause isn’t found. Good luck!

If Rex is squinting his eye and you're seeing swelling, Rex should be seen by a vet right away. Swelling of the eyelids & tissue *around* the eye may resolve after trauma, but if the globe (eyeball) is injured he may need treatment to protect that eye. And if the eye is fine, he'd probably appreciate if the vet prescribed a good anti-inflammatory pain medication for his comfort!

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. It is not safe to use human medications without knowing the exact medical condition as some treatments can actually worsen the patient's condition when used inadequately. Poor Beaudreax! He could have a problem with his other eye causing it to squint, like an ulcer as well or an infection. No, oral prednisone will not help his eye ulcer, nor will Ciprofloaxin drops. Treating an ulcer requires a specific topical eye specific medication which can only be prescribed by the vet. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give you some resources that may help. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Ouch, poor Sam! You did the right thing by rinsing his eye immediately. The redness and swelling of his eye could be a result of irritation from the shampoo. In some cases of irritation, the cornea can also become scratched, particularly if Sam is scratching his face or rubbing it on the ground. A vet should examine Sam's eyes and will likely need to perform a fluorescein stain test to determine if any scratches are present. If there are no scratches, Sam may need a prescription for a steroid based eye medication to decrease the inflammation in his eye. However, if a scratch is present, steroids in the eye are not safe and a different anti-inflammatory medication may be needed. Make sure Sam is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent him from irritating his eye further. I hope that he's on the mend soon!
