My puppy's eye is red. Are there any safe OTC drops or remedies?

Hello. I would not recommend using an antibiotic ointment in the eye, but a good ophthalmic lubricant would be better. Have you considered the surgery to repair the cherry eye? I would recommend stopping the drops if Eli's eyes became red after using them. It is possible the eye drops are actually causing irritation to the eyes. I would stop the drops and if you feel like eyes have discharge or the redness does not go away I would recommend taking her to a vet for a close exam! hope that helps

Oso likely has an eye infection and I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian. He will likely get antibiotic eye drops and the doctor may check for a scratch on the cornea as well. Make sure Oso is not rubbing at the eye as this can make it worse. An Elizabethan collar can help to keep the eye safe. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Poor Carly! Conjunctivitis can be uncomfortable, so I'm sorry to hear she is having issues with her eyes! Unfortunately there isn't much over the counter you can use. You can safely use eye saline (contact lens saline) to gently flush out her eye in case there is any microscopic debris causing the inflammation. It is possible that Carly has a scratch on her cornea as well, which can be mistaken for conjunctivitis. I would be concerned about a scratched cornea if her eye is quite red and if she is squinting. Most cases of conjunctivitis require a prescription antibiotic ointment or solution that is applied topically in the eye. I also like elizabethan collars on dogs with eye issues, as they often will paw at their eyes and make any eye issue worse. If it doesn't improve with a little saline flushing, I would recommend you take Carly in to see your vet to make sure it isn't a scratch and get some topical medication. From your description and the pictures, this may be an eye infection, trauma to the eye or allergies. Terramycin ophthalmic ointment is one antibiotic ointment that we do use to treat eye infections. I would say that this is safe to use but if the eye is worsening or is no better during or after the course of treatment, I would recommend having Pat examined by a veterinarian. Eyes are very delicate organs. If there is an injury it is always best to have your vet check it. Eye injuries can go from bad to worse quickly and then you risk losing vision and/or the eye itself. I have not seen the eye so it's hard to give advice. It is up to you though what you want to do. If you want to try something at home you can try this eye gel.
