My dog's eye is red and looks scratched. How can I treat it safely?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

My dog has redness in his right eye and a silver dot on it also like it got scratched . It don’t really discharge just a tiny bit. Is there anyway I can treat it. I think it was a scratch from a play fight.

Eyes are very delicate organs. If there is an injury it is always best to have your vet check it. Eye injuries can go from bad to worse quickly and then you risk losing vision and/or the eye itself. I have not seen the eye so it's hard to give advice. It is up to you though what you want to do. If you want to try something at home you can try this eye gel. If no improvement after a couple days of treatment then he needs to see the vet. I would use it 3-4 times per day.

Unfortunately, there are no home remedies or over the counter eye medications that are safe or effective to manage eye injuries. Charlie may have some inflammation in her eye from irritation or may have scratched the cornea, causing a corneal ulcer. Regardless, she should be examined by her vet. The vet will be able to perform a fluorescein stain of her eye to check for signs of an ulcer/scratch and will then be able to prescribe appropriate medication. Keep an e-collar (cone) on Charlie as her eye heals to prevent her from scratching or rubbing it, as this could make any injury much worse. I hope that she's on the mend soon!

Watch Egie for any signs that the eye itself was injured such as squinting, redness to the sclera or excessive tearing. As long as the injury is only on the skin, your pup can probably heal on his own. If the eye itself is injured, havehim examined quickly. Have him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Until the wound is healed, no more play dates. I am not familiar with Leucillin but as long as it is safe for the eyes, you can apply the ointment for the next 1- 2 days then stop. My dog's red, shut eye with discharge & ear scratching: Vet needed?

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. There is nothing you can do at home. He needs to be evaluated as soon as possible as this is likely serious and his eye health may be in jeopardy. My dog's eye is red, swollen, and discharging. Could it be scratched?

It's very difficult to tell from a picture if a dog or cat has scratched their eye. The best thing to do if this is what you fear may have happened is to allow a vet to put some fluoroscein solution into the eye. What this does is it seeks out any damaged corneal tissue and settles along it. This allows us to see if there is any actual damage, and if there is, tells us which medications are appropriate vs harmful. This is what I would suggest.

The best treatment is to have a vet look at the eyes and check for corneal scratches and other injuries so they can be treated with a pet-approved eye medication. Keeping the dogs separated if they are constantly fighting and monitoring them when they are together can prevent further injury. An Elizabethan (cone) collar can be used to keep your dogs from pawing at the eyes as well as they heal, but treatment from your vet is required.

Hi, it depends on the scratch, what caused it and how deep it is.In general a vet check up is the best way forward as if the scratched was caused by another dog or cat, might need antibiotics. My dog's eye is red after grooming. How do I treat the irritation?

It is likely that some shampoo, air from the dryer, or even small bits of hair from trimming got in your dog's eye and caused irritation. You can try to rinse your dog's eye gently with saline solution (like you use for contacts). However, there could be a scratch on your dog's eye (the cornea) as well. If it doesn't look better in 24 hours, see your veterinarian for testing to see if there is a scratch on your dog's eye and get appropriate medication.
