My dog is squinting and can't open her eyes. What can I give her?

She is likely suffering from an irritating severe eye infection, i would strongly recommend taking her to the vet ASAP in order to get her eyes checked and treated (this will require antibiotic eye drops)

Masie definitely looks uncomfortable. You can certainly try to flush her eye out at home with water or sterile saline. If you have a syringe or a turkey baster, this would be the best instrument with which to accomplish this. If this doesn't seem to help at all and Masie is still keeping her eye half way closed, she should definitely see a veterinarian. If she did in fact have something in her eye, it is possible that it could have scratched the surface of the eye resulting in a corneal ulcer. Sometimes, when the eyeball becomes irritated, dogs will also begin to scratch and paw at it causing damage. Ultimately, I don't like to mess around the eyes. I suggest having her looked at unless there is a miraculous turnaround and full recovery. Hope this helps!

Poor girl. Because she is keeping her eye closed, it is very likely she has a scratch or ulcer on her cornea (eye surface). Because of this type of injury, Suziee Lu will need to see your vet to have the eye checked. If there is a scratch, as suspected, then she will need topical prescription eye medication to get this to heal properly. It is ok to wipe the outside of the lid with warm salt water until you can get her in to your vet for further care. Try to get her seen soon to avoid further trauma to the eye which may be irreversible. I hope that Suzie Lu's eye injury resolves soon! Best of luck and take care. : )

If Lacey is squinting and not wanting to open them very much, they are likely bothering her and causing pain and discomfort. Dry eye, and eye infection, glaucoma and other ocular diseases can all cause eye discomfort. I would recommend Lacey see her primary care veterinarian for an eye exam soon to have these possibilities ruled out. Thanks again for your post!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lexi. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian as she may have a corneal ulcer. This is a scratch to the surface of the eye. It is very painful and causes the dog to squint, tear and possibly paw at the eye. Her veterinarian will place a drop of dye on the eye to test for an ulcer. If this is not the case, pugs are prone to condition known as pug keratitis. This is dark pigment that grows across the surface of the eye. I hope this information helps!

This can be a sign that Cali has an eye infection or may have injured her eye. This is something that needs to be checked out by a vet, as leaving eye problems untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take her into your vet first thing in the morning to have her eye examined and treated. You can try flushing her eye with sterile saline tonight to see if that helps with the squinting. It is very important that Cutie be seen by a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment of her eyes. Over-the-counter medications are not recommended for use in treatment of eye disease without a vet’s recommendation, as some types of eye ointments and drops contain steroids that can severely damage the eye if it has a scratch/corneal ulcer. Her vet will need to evaluate her eye, and may recommend testing such as a Fluorescein stain to look for scratched/ulcers, tonometry to test the eye pressures and look for glaucoma, or a Schirmer tear test to evaluate tear production. In some cases a combination of causes can lead to an uncomfortable eye, and as you mentioned some eye conditions can be very painful. Sometimes if eyelashes/ hair are growing in a way that causes them to touch the eye it can lead to pain as well. Cutie looks to have quite large, bulging eyes, which predisposes her to conditions such as dry eye, and if you suspect she is in pain you are likely correct.
