My dog has a red-brown mark under one eye. Should I be worried?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is very difficult to tell much from the photos. It doesn't look like a bump, it looks more like red skin like she scraped it or something. The eyeball itself looks fine and the eye does not appear red or irritated which is good. I suggest you just monitor this throughout the weekend and if no improvement by early next week then get her to your vet for an exam. I don't think I'd be too worried at this stage. Hope this helps. It's a bit difficult to tell from the picture, but it does not look like anything serious. It's likely just a spot that got bumped or irritated by something. These usually go away within a day or two. If all the white part was red and there was excessive tears, then I would be more concerned that something is continually irritating the eye and would recommend a visit to the vet for treatment. If she is otherwise appearing normal, then I think it's fine to wait a couple of days and see if this resolves on its own. I hope that helps and all is well with Millie.

From the photo this looks normal or a mild conjunctivitis. If she’s squinting, the eyes are painful or there is excessive tearing or discharge then please take her in for an eye exam tomorrow. To me it looks like her lower eyelids are more droopy than most dogs and this exposes more of the eyeball. That could result in the redness you are seeing. Again from the photo I’m not overly concerned at this point but I certainly recommend an exam to be sure there isn’t a medical problem that needs treatment. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, uveitis, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. If she has been scratching more than usual and scratching at that area, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, it would be fair to wait a bit to see if it resolves on its own. In that case, if no improvement is noted within 4-5 days, have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. Best of luck!

Sometimes there are changes in pigmentation in that region of the eye which are not considered abnormal especially if not bothering the patient. Good luck and have a good night!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Shiro isn’t holding the eye closed or acting painful and there isn’t yellow-green discharge you can just monitor the eye. It could simply be allergies. If the eye is painful he sadly should be seen to make sure their isn’t a scratch, uveitis or glaucoma. I hope this help and I hope you have a good holiday!
