My dog's eye is red and off-color. When should I worry and see a vet?

In some breeds the eyes can get a little red with excitement, when they are tired, etc. As long as Olaf's eyes do not seem painful: excessive blinking, holding an eye closed, excessive tearing, yellow or green discharge or rubbing them it is fine to wait until your appointment next week. However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh goodness! Poor Paris! Sadly Paris needs to see a Vet for her eye. A painful red eye needs immediate Veterinary care. Possible causes are: a corneal ulcer, infection, allergies, trauma, inflammation or glaucoma. There are specific medications that are safe for the eye and she needs a diagnosis first. This just looks like an area of inflammation in the conjunctiva. It may have developed from something irritating in the eye. At this point it’s nothing to be overly concerned about. Please check it daily, it should improve and go away in a few days. If it starts to look worse then certainly a veterinary exam is indicated.
