My dog's eye is red and off-color. When should I worry and see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 21 lbs

I noticed one of his eyes seemed off color and seemed to be a bit redder than usual. I can't really afford to take him to the vet unless it is serious. Is it something I should have him seen for?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

If Shiro isn’t holding the eye closed or acting painful and there isn’t yellow-green discharge you can just monitor the eye. It could simply be allergies. If the eye is painful he sadly should be seen to make sure their isn’t a scratch, uveitis or glaucoma.

I hope this help and I hope you have a good holiday!
