My puppy's eye has a burst blood vessel. Should I see a vet?

If Scarlet is squinting or if her eye has discharge I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. The blood vessels in the eye can become larger when dogs are excited or when they have eye infection or inflammation. If just the one blood vessel is affected and she doesn't seem uncomfortable you probably don't need to intervene unless the redness gets worse.

Judging by the picture it looks as if Pompeu has a burst blood vessel in his eye. This usually occurs from increased pressure in the eye or some type of injury or trauma. With time the blood will go away and there is nothing you need to do for the eye. If you notice any discharge, your dog is holding the eye closed, or if the eye seems swollen at all, then I would recommend you taking him into see the vet. It depends where the blood vessel is located. Whether the vessel you are seeing is in or on the surface of the eye can really help determine if this should be cause for concern. There can be normal blood vessels that are on the white part (sclera) of the eye ball itself. However, any evidence of a blood vessel inside the eyeball is not normal. Bulging vessels can occur if a dog has high blood pressure or something blocking flow of the blood through the vessel. It may be best to have your veterinarian examine Diesel's eye to ensure that this is not a sign of a disease affecting his entire body, such as high blood pressure.

Based on the picture, Peggy's blood vessel looks most like a vortex vein, which is a normal variation in some dogs. Vortex veins do not go away, but they also do not cause problems or require any treatment. However, I can't say definitively that this is indeed a benign vortex vein without examining Peggy to be sure that she doesn't have any other ocular changes. I would certainly take Peggy to a veterinarian right away for an exam and have a plan in place with the breeder if your vet feels that she may have other bigger issues after their exam. Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. In the meantime, keep a close eye (no pun intended) on Dodi, and give your vet a call in the morning. I hope Dodi's eyes clear up soon! Best regards,

Cherry eye is a disorder of the tear gland and can become infected which can cause it to bleed. Your veterinarian may recommend antibiotics or steroids for the eye temporarily. Ultimately, corrective surgery is often needed for cherry eye which can be done by your veterinarian.

A broken vessel in an eye can be caused by a few different things including trauma, infection, high blood pressure, etc. If the eye is otherwise not injured then either the stress of being in hospital caused Sascha's blood pressure to increase and she burst a vessel (if she is a stressed dog), or she might have had a bit of a trauma during the dental, as sometimes you have to hold their head still while doing extractions. Even with the most gentle and carefully performed dental procedure, this can happen, as those vessels can burst with a small amount of pressure, and you need to put a bit of pressure on the head to support it to properly and safely remove the tooth. You can always ask your vet as well. As long as Sascha isn't squinting, and can see ok, it will heal up with time. Best of luck with Sascha.
