My 2-month-old puppy has a red vein in her eye. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 23 days old | 10 lbs

My 2 month old puppy's right eye has a red vein popping out more than the others. I'm NT sure if I should be considered or not.

If Scarlet is squinting or if her eye has discharge I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. The blood vessels in the eye can become larger when dogs are excited or when they have eye infection or inflammation. If just the one blood vessel is affected and she doesn't seem uncomfortable you probably don't need to intervene unless the redness gets worse.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Red eye can be caused by conjunctivitis, which is an infection of the tissues on the interior of the eyelids. It can also be due to a foreign body, a corneal ulcer, or be an allergic reaction. I recommend having Jax seen by a vet as soon as possible, especially if the condition gets worse, as eye conditions can quickly become emergencies. I hope all is well!

It could be that King has an eye infection. I would take him into a vet immediately. Any eye problem should be considered an emergency, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can diagnose what is causing his eye to be red and have discharge, and can prescribe medication to treat it.

Poor Olaf! This could be a minor eye irritation or it could be more serious like an ulcer on the eye(s) or conjunctivitis (infection). Since they are becoming more red, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to stain the eye to rule out corneal ulcers and be able to tell if there is any other causes for the redness. They will also be able to start him on the proper meds to help him feel better if needed. I hope this helps!

Based on what I can see in the photo, this looks like a normal blood vessel :) It's very common for dogs to have one or more enlarged veins in the white part of the eye, called "vortex veins" - these are normal, and are responsible for draining different types of fluid from inside the eye. As long as Delilah doesn't have any redness, squinting, or discharge from the eye, there should be no reason for concern.

She is very young, there is a good chance that it will go away on it's own eventually but it is impossible to know for sure, and even if it doesn't go away, it's not likely to cause any medical problems.

My dog has a bulging blood vessel in his eye, no pain. Is it serious?

It depends where the blood vessel is located. Whether the vessel you are seeing is in or on the surface of the eye can really help determine if this should be cause for concern. There can be normal blood vessels that are on the white part (sclera) of the eye ball itself. However, any evidence of a blood vessel inside the eyeball is not normal. Bulging vessels can occur if a dog has high blood pressure or something blocking flow of the blood through the vessel. It may be best to have your veterinarian examine Diesel's eye to ensure that this is not a sign of a disease affecting his entire body, such as high blood pressure.

Chihuahua puppy eye vessel: Is it normal, and will it fade away?

Based on the picture, Peggy's blood vessel looks most like a vortex vein, which is a normal variation in some dogs. Vortex veins do not go away, but they also do not cause problems or require any treatment. However, I can't say definitively that this is indeed a benign vortex vein without examining Peggy to be sure that she doesn't have any other ocular changes. I would certainly take Peggy to a veterinarian right away for an exam and have a plan in place with the breeder if your vet feels that she may have other bigger issues after their exam. My dog has red, bloodshot eyes and discharge. Should I see a vet?

Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. In the meantime, keep a close eye (no pun intended) on Dodi, and give your vet a call in the morning. I hope Dodi's eyes clear up soon! Best regards,
