How many raisins can a dog eat before it becomes dangerously toxic or fatal?

To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t. It is never wrong to have him evaluated by an emergency veterinarian, but I feel the risk is minimal if no raisins were ingested. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

The milk may cause some GI upset, but the raisins are a problem. There is no known safe amount of raisins for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make Sora vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep her on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat raisins without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take her to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!

Hello. This is always a bit of a quandary because there are no hard rules for raisin & grape consumption in small amounts. A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. Toxicity from raisin ingestion is around 0.11 oz/kg of raisins. And most raisins weigh around 0.5g, making a toxic amount around 6 raisings per kg of body weight in a dog. Dolly's weight is 1.7kg. However, this is just an average. To be absolutely sure and safe, I would still consider having both pets evaluated by your local ER vet and induce vomiting if possible. Hydrogen peroxide is only one way to induce vomiting in dogs. The medicine your vet carries is more effective at inducing vomiting, but this can only be done 1-2 hrs after ingesting a toxin. Hello. Raisins can be toxic, but your pet would not have had an opportunity to ingest enough to cause any issues. Just licking the residue from the dish or eating a tiny piece would not be a problem.

Yes, raisins and grapes are both toxic to mice. Ingestion can cause acute kidney injury (AKI). The mechanism of how grapes and raisins cause AKI is unknown. There are several suspected hypotheses: * inability to metabolize certain components of the fruit (ie: tannins, high monosaccharide content) * there may be mycotoxins or pesticide residues on the fruit that is the issue and not the actual fruit itself * the presence of salicylate-like chemicals within the grape or raisin It is best to steer clear of feeding either of these to your mice.
