My dog ate an oatmeal cookie with raisin juice. Will he be okay?

Hello. This is always a bit of a quandary because there are no hard rules for raisin & grape consumption in small amounts. A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t. It is never wrong to have him evaluated by an emergency veterinarian, but I feel the risk is minimal if no raisins were ingested. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

This is the smallest amount of raisin consumption ever documented that caused acute damage to the kidneys. Raisins 0.11 oz/kg Ziggy is 6 lbs or 2.7 kg. 2.7 kg x .11 ozs = 0.3 ounces of raisins for his body weight. However, SMALLER amounts could also cause problems - we really don't know exactly what the minimum dose is. Also, not every dog or cat is susceptible - many animals can tolerate large quantities of grapes or raisins without problems. Nobody knows what the patient risk factors are (other than ingestion). Dried cranberries are not toxic to dogs, and even if it was a raisin, he only got a tiny amount. He should be fine, and the only action I'd take is to make sure he doesn't get any more! Since we don't know the exact amount of raisins needed to cause kidney failure, it is always best to seek veterinary care immediately. Unless Dahlia is in congestive heart failure, I would not see a reason to prevent induction of vomiting in a vet office. Hello. Raisins can be toxic, but your pet would not have had an opportunity to ingest enough to cause any issues. Just licking the residue from the dish or eating a tiny piece would not be a problem.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think Noxie will be fine. I have never heard of a cat or dog experiencing a toxicity from grape juice. Though I guess it could be possible. But with the small amount likely in the Kefir and the only occasional times you give it I am sure that Noxie will be fine. Obviously I would stop giving her this form of Kefir and stick with the non-fruit flavors if you continue to give it. I hope this helps!
