Are raisins safe for mice? What happens if my pet mouse eats them?

As we do not know what is causing the toxicity, there is also no safe amount. Some dogs get sick after eating one raisin, others can eat raisins and do not get ill. So I am afraid there is no answer to your question other than not to let your dog eat any raisins at all.

Hello. This is always a bit of a quandary because there are no hard rules for raisin & grape consumption in small amounts. A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. The short answer is no. Cheese simply isn't an appropriate component of any pet mouse diet. Cheese offers no nutritional value to mice and therefore just isn't appropriate or safe. A healthy mouse diet calls for a balanced commercial mouse food. Mouse food is available at most pet supply retailers; it often comes in the form of pellets or blocks. Seed mix is another common option. It is recommended that you feed your mouse a single tablespoon of this ration every day -- nothing more, nothing less. Although you'll cross cheese off the "Suitable Mouse Snacks" list, all human treats are not out the window. If you want to reward your sweet mouse with something yummy and different once in a while, choices to consider include blueberries, apples, cauliflowers, carrots, bananas, zucchini, cucumbers and peas. Before allowing your mouse to munch on any of these fresh items, rinse them carefully and chop them up into small, mouse-friendly nibbles. Keep portions minimal. Excessive amounts may lead to belly distress. Again, a teaspoon is enough -- serve it just a couple times a week, though. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

The milk may cause some GI upset, but the raisins are a problem. There is no known safe amount of raisins for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make Sora vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep her on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat raisins without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take her to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!

To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t. Raisins 0.11 oz/kg Ziggy is 6 lbs or 2.7 kg. 2.7 kg x .11 ozs = 0.3 ounces of raisins for his body weight. However, SMALLER amounts could also cause problems - we really don't know exactly what the minimum dose is.
