My dog ate raisins! Is hydrogen peroxide safe to induce vomiting?

Toxicity from raisin ingestion is around 0.11 oz/kg of raisins. And most raisins weigh around 0.5g, making a toxic amount around 6 raisings per kg of body weight in a dog. Dolly's weight is 1.7kg. However, this is just an average. To be absolutely sure and safe, I would still consider having both pets evaluated by your local ER vet and induce vomiting if possible. Hydrogen peroxide is only one way to induce vomiting in dogs. The medicine your vet carries is more effective at inducing vomiting, but this can only be done 1-2 hrs after ingesting a toxin. Since we don't know the exact amount of raisins needed to cause kidney failure, it is always best to seek veterinary care immediately. Unless Dahlia is in congestive heart failure, I would not see a reason to prevent induction of vomiting in a vet office. I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t. It would be hard to tell as every dog will react differently to the ingestion of grape/raisins and chocolate, and it toxicity can also depend on how quickly/slowly any of it was digested. Some dogs may be able to better handle a higher dosage, while others may react strongly to a smaller amount. It's best that you have the bloodwork scheduled, as that will give you the best picture of what is going on for Iggy specifically. I'd also recommend a follow-up blood panel in a month or two, as some dogs have shown delayed responses to ingestion of toxic foods before. Signs to watch out for of something being wrong include lethargy, vomiting, a painful or hunched abdomen, drinking/urinating more, and just general malaise. These are all signs that you should seek more immediate treatment if needed.

Hello. This is always a bit of a quandary because there are no hard rules for raisin & grape consumption in small amounts. A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. As we do not know what is causing the toxicity, there is also no safe amount. Some dogs get sick after eating one raisin, others can eat raisins and do not get ill. So I am afraid there is no answer to your question other than not to let your dog eat any raisins at all.
