My dog ate raisins, didn't vomit after peroxide. Should I be worried?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 3.8 lbs

I have two 10lbs mini dachshunds that just ate 4-5 raisins each. I have given them both 15mL of hydrogen peroxide each and they haven’t vomited. Should I be worried? Can they die from this?

Toxicity from raisin ingestion is around 0.11 oz/kg of raisins. And most raisins weigh around 0.5g, making a toxic amount around 6 raisings per kg of body weight in a dog. Dolly's weight is 1.7kg. However, this is just an average. To be absolutely sure and safe, I would still consider having both pets evaluated by your local ER vet and induce vomiting if possible. Hydrogen peroxide is only one way to induce vomiting in dogs. The medicine your vet carries is more effective at inducing vomiting, but this can only be done 1-2 hrs after ingesting a toxin.

Yes, this may be cause for concern. Unfortunately the exact dose of raisins (or grapes) that may cause a toxicity is unknown. To add tot he confusion, some dogs seem unaffected after ingestion.
The safest option would be to have them seen at the nearest veterinary ER. Vomiting can be induced via injection to get the raisins up and out. Activated charcoal may be given afterwards to further reduce any absorption. All this is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. You can discuss the need to monitor kidney function with the vet depending on whether or not all the raisins come up.
Given current events, you may need to drop them off at the ER then wait for the vet to call to discuss exam findings and treatment options.

I don't think she will from eating 2 grapes but every dog responds differently to certain toxins. Even though you gave the peroxide to induce vomiting you should still get her to the vet. The vet will administer activated charcoal which will help absorb the toxins before they get picked up by the blood stream. They can also keep her on IV fluids for 24-48 hours to help keep the kidneys flushed out. That is what I would do if this was my dog. Usually, if you induce vomiting within 3 hours you can get out the toxin out of the stomach. It may not have been easily identifiable if it was in there for 45 minutes.

Three grapes should not be enough to cause problems, but the toxicity of grapes widely varies between different types of grapes, so I can't say for sure. It would be good to give some more pedialyte tomorrow also. This will force hydration and allow for good clearance of the toxin.

If she is not urinating, vomiting or something else seems abnormal with her, then it's best to get her to the vet as soon as possible.

If you know she only ingested 3 and she puked them back up then you should be in the clear. However, peroxide can cause irritation to the stomach so if she continues to vomit or has a decrease in appetite tomorrow then you may want to have her seen by your veterinarian for some nausea medication. The milk may cause some GI upset, but the raisins are a problem. There is no known safe amount of raisins for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make Sora vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep her on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat raisins without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take her to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!

My dog ate a grape. Is too much peroxide harmful after vomiting?

I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

This is the smallest amount of raisin consumption ever documented that caused acute damage to the kidneys. Raisins 0.11 oz/kg Ziggy is 6 lbs or 2.7 kg. 2.7 kg x .11 ozs = 0.3 ounces of raisins for his body weight. However, SMALLER amounts could also cause problems - we really don't know exactly what the minimum dose is. Also, not every dog or cat is susceptible - many animals can tolerate large quantities of grapes or raisins without problems. Nobody knows what the patient risk factors are (other than ingestion). Hello. This is always a bit of a quandary because there are no hard rules for raisin & grape consumption in small amounts. A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. My dog drank hydrogen peroxide but didn't throw up. Is he safe?

The dose of peroxide needed to induce vomiting is 1 milliliter (ml) per pound of dog weight. The maximum amount of hydrogen peroxide to be given at any one time is 45 ml, even if a dog weighs over 45 pounds. It's OK that you gave it and he didn't vomit it is just that peroxide is very irritating to the stomach lining and cause ulcerations and other issues. I suggest you feed him a couple pieces of bread to help "soak up" the peroxide as it passes through his system.

Since we don't know the exact amount of raisins needed to cause kidney failure, it is always best to seek veterinary care immediately. Unless Dahlia is in congestive heart failure, I would not see a reason to prevent induction of vomiting in a vet office. My dog ate rice pudding cooked with raisins, but didn't eat any. Safe?

To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t.
