My dog licked a raisin dish lid. Is less urination a bad sign?

To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t. It is never wrong to have him evaluated by an emergency veterinarian, but I feel the risk is minimal if no raisins were ingested. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, the answer is “there is no way to know”. Not all dogs will develope any type of kidney injury. The dogs that do get kidney damage sometimes do not show signs on bloodwork for up to 72 hours. To be safe I’d say do a kidney blood panel and urinalysis on Monday. Realistically though, if there is no increased drinking or urinating or any other changes by tomorrow, she is likely to be just fine. Best of luck to you and Luna!

Hello. This is always a bit of a quandary because there are no hard rules for raisin & grape consumption in small amounts. A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. Raisins have the potential to cause kidney failure which causes the dog to act lethargic, not eat, maybe vomit and likely drink and urinate more. If your puppy isn’t doing any of those things I doubt the raisin has anything to do with it. He may have a urinary tract infection or crystals in his urine. I recommend making an appointment with your Vet for tomorrow and bring a irons sample. I good this helps and I wish you the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lilo is adorable! If a dog ate raisins or grapes and became sick (days later) they can drool because they are nauseous. Raisins and grapes have the potential to cause kidney failure. Kidney failure makes dogs vomit and not eat. The nausea could cause drooling but I don't think you'd see that JUST when they are sleeping and I would also assume you'd see other signs of illness. I think she is probably fine but if you are worried about raisin ingestion then I have to recommend making an appointment with your Vet Friday for blood work. It will give you peace of mind as well. There are no home remedies to prevent any adverse effects from rapes, but poisoning events and kidney failure are quite rare. Not all grapes/raisins appear to be toxic so I recommend monitoring for any change in thirst and urination
