My puppy accidentally took too much pyrantel. Is he safe?

Pyrantel is a very very safe medication and you'd have to give a healthy pet an obscene amount for it to be harmful. That said, if you're concerned, the best thing to do would be to call pet poison control (which does cost about $70, but may be covered by pet insurance if you have it) with your pet's weight and how much you gave, because even very safe meds can be overdosed if enough is given.

Wormers are generally considered very safe medications and although some vomiting or diarrhea may develop this should resolve uneventfully. Some types can cause tremors and neurological signs and you should contact an emergency vet and inform them of the brand, timing and dosage if you notice any unusual symptoms

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Generally speaking the active ingredients in most of these dewormers for dogs have a very wide margin of safety so giving another dose by accident is not likely to cause any significant issues.

That sounds like the correct dose of pyrantel. I don't know if Billy is not eating because of taking the pyrantel or not. Some diarrhea while treating for worms is expected. Unless the diarrhea is extremely water I would not overly worried about dehydration especially since he is drinking water. I would, however, be worried about a puppy that doesn't eat for longer than 48 hours. I suggest you call your vet for more advice.

It sounds like he has roundworms. VERY common in puppies. The pyrantel is fine to use but I cannot speak to the dose as I don't know how many mg per ml it is. Use the dosing recommendations on the bottle. Puppies need to be dewormed with pyrantel at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age when they get their vaccines. If he is still showing signs of worms after those three doses then he may need additional treatment. If he is itchy, at his age it is likely fleas or mites. I would treat him for fleas even if you don't see them on him. Worming tablets are designed to be eaten and are recommended monthly up to 6months because pups catch worms from their mothers. I recommend you check the strength of the tablet in relation to his weight but side effects other than mild gastrointestinal issues are very rare even if they eat too much. Monthly treatment for life is recommended if you are in a heartworm or lungworm affected area and every 3montgs otherwise
