Puppy not eating, diarrhea after hookworm medicine. Should I worry?

Hello, I do not believe the pyrantel from 6 days ago would have any affect on today. Vomiting and diarrhea in a puppy could be commonly caused by infectious disease, such as parvovirus, or an intestinal obstruction, such as a swallowed toy stuck in the intestines. It would be helpful to know if Billy has had all of his vaccinations. I'd recommend an appointment with your vet. They can guide you best after a physical exam. If Billy becomes lethargic or uninterested in food, that would be a sign to get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helps. It sounds like Odin has a very heavy infestion of worms, and you can get him an OTC deworming treatment for it. I recommend Panacur. In the meantime, try to tempt him to eat by soaking his puppy food in gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth, or offering him small amounts of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice. Should he refuse to eat this and continues not to drink, then it becomes a medical emergency, and you will need to find a vet on call to see him right away.

Poor pups. While a heavy parasite load can cause severe GI upset, and anemia which can cause a pup to become extremely lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, etc, I would also want to rule out underlying illnesses as a possibility. It would be best to bring them to a vet ASAP especially if they are lethargic or unable to keep any food or water down as puppies can quickly become very dehydrated. They may also need supportive care such as an IV or injected medications if they are very ill from the parasites or other causes. You can try continuing to offer water, or rubbing a little honey on their gums for energy until you can get to the vet, however due to the severity of symptoms it would be best to seek emergency care.

I'm wondering if you mean you gave Buddy a dewormer. You can see some stomach upset from giving a deworming treatment, as it can be due to the dead worms moving through the GI system, but it shouldn't stop him from eating completely. I would be concerned that he could have a medical illness causing him to not eat and have deceased drinking. Because of this, I would have him checked out by a vet right away. Best of luck.

Hi,t hanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dewowmers have the potential to cause an upset stomach such as vomit, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

I'm not sure what "puppy dp" (perhaps a distemper/parvo vaccine) is but I'm concerned about Billi. Sometimes only one deworming treatment doesn't completely resolve a worm infestation. Ideally, puppies are dewormed every 2 weeks starting at 2 weeks of age until they are 12 weeks old. However, I rarely see puppies actually feel bad if worms are present, especially if they have been dewormed once. My bigger concern is another, more serious problem, such as parvovirus or an intestinal foreign body/blockage. Puppies aren't fully protected with just one vaccine (if that is what you mean by "dp") so it is possible for them to contact it. He needs to be seen very urgently, as I'm worried about hypoglycemia and dehydration. Please get him checked out by a vet as soon as possible.

Lelia not eating is a sign that she feels very bad and it's possible that it is related to a reaction from that dewormer although other causes are possible. The big concern is that she is very young and not eating. Puppies do not have the physical reserves of an adult dog. If she has not been eating since Monday then you need to take her in for an exam and medications to soothe her stomach. You don't want her to end up with low blood sugar and need a visit to the emergency clinic! If she will not eat her own puppy food, try warmed white meat chicken and plain white rice. This is not balanced but it will be fine for a few days. If she will not eat that, she is pretty sick. With young puppies, it's best to be cautious as they are fragile. Have her checked out today if possible.
