My dog suddenly pooped purple or red. Is my dog's health at risk?

Yes, please take Kiwi to the veterinarian. The mucus and blood in the stool can be due to many things including parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, or from intestinal bleeding due to medications. Since Kiwi is a younger dog he should recover quickly once the reason for this diarrhea is diagnosed and treated. Kiwi may become dehydrated and anemic if this continues and he could become very weak and ill so please get him treatment soon. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Miki! Blood in the diarrhea indicates inflammation with in the colon. It isn't uncommon for a dog with severe diarrhea or diarrhea for a few days to develop blood in the stool. The blood can cause significant dehydration so it is important to make sure he isn't very lethargic and it drinking. If the diarrhea is severe (accidents in the house, can't hold it and asking to go out often) then I recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water. This will allow his GI tract to calm down. Then restart feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If he is very lethargic, starts vomiting and will not eat or drink he should be seen by a Vet today. Otherwise you can do the above and have him seen, if needed, by your Vet when they open. I would most certainly get his stool checked for parasites. If he is otherwise acting normal and eating well, then this is the most likely cause. If he is not fully vaccinated and also acting ill, then he could certainly have parvovirus. You can try offering a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice for now to help settle his stomach until you can get him seen by your vet. I hope that your pet Major is able to recover soon. Rufus probably ate something that was colored purple. A lot of kids food/cereals or cool aid can turn poo different colors because of the dye they use in the food. Try to investigate to see if he got into the trash or could have eaten some purple colored food. If Rufus starts to act like he doesn't feel well, take him into the vet immediately because he could have gotten into something toxic. Hope this has helped. Thanks for using pet coach.

I wouldn’t be worried about the color of kiwi s stool at all. The color can vary significantly, especially when new foods and treats are added. If she starts straining while having a bowel movement, or if she develops a poor appetite, diarrhea or weight loss then I would have her evaluated by her veterinarian. I love her name!! It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. Based on the picture, it looks as though Hamilton has a bit of dark red blood in his stool. The fact that the blood is red tells me that it's coming from the colon since blood from the stomach or small intestines is black from being at least partially digested. Bordetella vaccines won't cause any bloody stools, but stress or anxiety (possibly from his vet visit?) can cause a bit of stress colitis. Likewise, blood in the stool can occur with intestinal parasites, viruses, or some blood clotting conditions. Since Hamilton otherwise seems completely normal, I would start by asking your vet to send a stool sample to the lab to check for intestinal parasites, including various microscopic worm eggs, Giardia, and coccidia. In the meantime, also keep a close eye on his stool to see if this is an ongoing issue. If this was a one time occurrence, I wouldn't be concerned at all. However, if this is an ongoing issue, it's worth taking him back to the vet for further investigation and testing. I hope that everything goes well!
