My dog is pooping bright red blood. Is it serious? What should I do?

These signs may be compatible with a gastrointestinal inflammation involving the last part of the gastrointestinal system (colon). Presence of fresh blood in the feces is quite common but usually not very concerning unless other signs are present as well (lethargy and inappetence for example). As a first line approach a part from pepto tablets, I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. The most common cause of this is gastrointestinal infection but it also may be due to scavenging, intoxication, bleeding ulcer, low platelet count and more. Please, take Jersey to your local vets for a check. He definitely will need a few days of antibiotics but prior to this, your vet will possibly recommend a blood test or ultrasound scan to make sure there is nothing more serious going on.

You’re doing the right thing for the diarrhea. As far as the blood goes, he probably just has irritation around his anus or in the intestinal tract from the diarrhea. That is not uncommon in dogs and if it’s only a small amount once in a while it’s nothing to be overly concerned about. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To treat diarrhea I recommend fast Otis for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water unless vomiting. Then restart feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per day until 2 days of normal stools. If the diarrhea doesn't improve he should be seen by your Vet. As for the bleeding butt-I would need more information. If you mean there is blood in the stool then the above may help. But if there is blood in the stool Otis ideally needs antibiotics which you can get from your Vet. If there is a wound on his butt or near his butt then he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps

Diarrhea with mucous like that is concerning for either a mild GI upset, or could be caused by a more severe problem such as IBD or cancer. The small bits of blood could just be a bit of colitis (inflammed colon) and some burst vessels, or could be due to a clotting disease or a tumor (the last two much less likely). If Louie is still eating, drinking, playing and acting normally, then you can monitor for now and if the blood or diarrhea gets worse then bring him to a vet. If you see any other signs such as weakness, vomiting, inappetance, trouble breathing, or more blood, then get Louie to a vet right away. One possible cause as well is rat bait toxicity, so if there is ANY chance Louie could have gotten into rat bait then I would have him checked by a vet right away. Overall, it is likely not a concern, however monitor closely and bring him to a vet if you see any decline. Best of luck with Louie!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see that Koda's vomit is reddish in color and has some red flecks in it. It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Happy. Dark red diarrhea can be a sign of intestinal bleeding from the stomach or the small intestines. I don't think this could be related to the beef she was given as that was 2 weeks ago and would be atypical anyways. I would advise that if this continues, worsens, or other signs develop, you should take Happy to your veterinarian to have her evaluated. Your vet can gather a detailed history and perform a thorough examination. From those, a diagnostic/treatment plan can be developed and started. Possible problems include intestinal parasites, gastrointestinal ulcer, toxin exposure, infection, inflammation, foreign body ingestion, nutritional problems, among many other things. Your vet may advise fecal/blood/urine tests and some imaging studies (x-rays, ultrasound) to get started. Once the cause is determined or suspected a treatment plan can be started. Treatment could include fluids, electrolytes, acid blockers, gastrointestinal protectants, deworming, antibiotics, medicines for diarrhea, etc. Good luck with Happy.
