My dog has a puffy eyelid but is acting normal. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 42 lbs

My cocker spaniel mix had been sleeping and just woke up with a puffy bottom eye lid on one side (photo attached). He's acting completely normal- should I go see an emergency vet?

This could be due to an infection, or fluid build-up under the skin. If Seb is otherwise eating/drinking and acting normal, then there's no need to rush to the emergency vet. This can wait until tomorrow during normal business hours.

These type of swellings can happen with tooth-root infections, or if Seb hit his face on something earlier.

It's difficult to know how concerning this is without more information and being able to examine him, so you may consider having an online consult with one of our vets on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Hello. This could be some type of allergic reaction. Apply a warm compress to the area twice a day for 10-15 minutes at a time. You will need to keep the water quite warm, but not uncomfortable. Poor Sassy! That is very swollen. If it is just the eyelid that is affected, it should be fine to wait until tomorrow to take her to the vet, but if anything gets worse overnight, I would take her right in. If you see signs such as squinting, redness, drainage from the eye, or a cloudiness in the clear part of the eye, I would take her in tonight. Injuries to the eyeball can be very serious and get worse very quickly. I hope this helps and that Sassy gets better very soon!

My dog's eye is swollen and lid drooping, but she acts normal. Why?

Eye problems are always very concerning and Pup Pup will need to be examined by a veterinarian ASAP. Corneal ulcers and injuries can cause loss of vision, are painful and can be caused even by crusty eye lids scraping on the eye ball. The fact that the eye is swollen and the the lower lid is drooping does point to a more serious problem. Please take her to an emergency vet today.

My dog's eyelid is suddenly swollen. What can I do until the vet?

I suspect it may be a rapidly growing abscess. Tooth root abscesses usually result in swelling just below the eye. Please, clean the skin and the eye with boiled, warm water and cotton buds and make sure Yoda is not scratching or rubbing the face. Then take her to your local vets as soon as they open in the morning. If she looking very unwell or she is in a lot of pain, call your local emergency service tonight.

My dog has lumpy, swollen eyelids and hair loss. Is it serious?

Oscar needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. That swelling most likely indicates an allergic reaction, a deep skin infection or cellulitis. All of these conditions require treatment. Make sure to protect his eyes from any rubbing by having him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Rubbing the eye could make things worse. Have him seen quickly. Best of luck.

My dog's eye is suddenly swollen and protruding. Is it an emergency?

This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

Any eye problem is considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take him into a vet immediately to get treated. Best of luck.
