My dog projectile vomited food and grass. Is it an upset stomach?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 50 lbs

Bruin, a border collir lab mix at 14 months.... just projectile threw up everywhere. It was brown and chunky and looked like it was the dog food she eats. I have been feeding it to her for two and a half months, no problems until now. It is bluewilderness and the kind petsmart recommended so i dont think its the type of food. There was some grass in it, but she always eats a lil grass and has neeever thrown up like this. Should I be worried or perhaps her stomach was just upset ???

Hopefully, it is just dietary indiscretion but I am always concerned for intestinal obstruction in young dogs with projectile vomiting. If the vomiting continues follow up with your veterinarian to discuss abdominal x-rays.

It looks like this could be something your dog vomited up since it is covered with some grass and wet (often this is how vomit can appear). It is tough to tell what this might be without being able to touch it/feel consistency. If it is soft I would be suspicious of stuffing of some sort or it could possibly be dry dog kibble that has swollen due to fluid in the stomach and then been thrown up. I would monitor her closely and if she is lethargic, vomiting continues, she has abdominal pain, then seek veterinary care. I am sorry Dozer threw up last night. Grass can definitely upset his stomach. I would make sure he doesn't eat anymore of it. My 9-week-old puppy threw up after eating grass. Should I worry?

There could be many things that are causing this in Loki. Less likely a foreign body especially since he bounces back right after vomiting. It can be viral related or just a gastrointestinal upset. We always are concerned about Parvo in an unvaccinated puppy since he is only 9 weeks but this is less likely if he is energetic and has no diarrhea. He can always have intestinal parasites especially in a young puppy. I would recommend a stool check, deworming, a bland diet and an antacid as long as everything else is ok. It's hard to say. Some dogs will eat grass or leaves because their stomach hurts, as it often induces vomiting. Some dogs just like to eat these things and it doesn't cause any harm. I think it is worth discussing with your vet, especially if this is happening more than just occasionally.

My dog vomited clear liquid with grass. Should I call the vet now?

Sonetimes dogs get a bit of a tummy upset called gastritis. It can be caused by eating something rancid or an infection. Sometimes they simply have too much acid. Eating grass is a sign the tummy is sore. He will likely be a little unsettled but if he is not continually vomiting I would let him rest overnight then take him to the vet in the morning g if he is still poorly. It’s possible that something on the walk caused Michi’s stomach upset: there are many, many potential causes of vomiting in dogs. I don’t necessarily consider one episode of vomiting an urgent problem, but if the vomiting continues, if Michi’s appetite is significantly decreased for 24 hours or more, or if he develops diarrhea then you should head to a vet.
