Puppy vomiting 5 days, vet said probiotics. Are they good for gastritis?

A probiotic will help restore and maintain the good gut bacteria and while this is an excellent supplement to give, it will probably not do much for an upset stomach. Murray may need to see his veterinarian if he continues to vomit. There are a variety of causes for vomiting- eating something out of the ordinary, gastrointestinal obstructions, pancreatitis, bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections along with organ dysfunction such as kidney disease, endocrine diseases and even certain cancers. Until Murray can see his veterinarian, I'd recommend withholding food from him for a day (he can have water) to give his stomach a break and then slowly reintroduce his regular food or a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to him in frequent small amounts. If he continues to vomit, he'll need to see his veterinarian. I hope this helps!

Hello. I think this is an excellent idea. We are learning more every day about the importance of probiotics & their effects on the gut microbiome. Some dog foods even supply extra probiotics in their formulas, so this is an option. Giardia can be frustrating to deal with. Using a probiotic daily may help in combating any potential flare-ups. No, I don't think any vomiting is normal. With all the issues he really should be back at the vet so they can check him. He really should be hospitalized until he is eating normally and holding it down with no vomiting for a few days. If they find no issues he may just need to be on a daily anti-vomiting medication like Cerenia or an antacid like Pepcid.

It is best to get probiotics from your veterinarian as the bacteria in a dog's gastrointestinal system are different from those for humans or cows. If you cannot get those, you can feed small amounts of natural (live) yoghurt with his food.

I was going to suggest the same thing with the pepcid or antacid pills. If that doesn't help I would look into getting her some probiotics like fortiflora which is a powder that goes over the food and can be given daily long term. Another option would be proviable which is a paste that you give orally. Both I would suggest to give long term. I would also make sure your vet has ruled out all parasites including giardia. I have had several patients in the past who have had giardia and showed similar signs. I hope this helps!

Hello. Yes, you can give Priat some plain yogurt to see if this helps to settle his stomach. You also want to feed him a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken & 75% white rice or low fat cottage cheese. Feed him only small amounts ( no more than a cup ) every 3-4 hours until you are sure he is no longer vomiting. Hopefully, this is just a case of acute gastritis & most pets are feeling better in 12-24 hours. If not, please see your veterinarian for further diagnostics & treatments. Probiotics wouldn't hurt. You can get them from your vet or use plain yogurt (not sugar free or flavored) to add some to her meal. You can also use a little canned pumpkin to add some fiber. However if the soft stool continues, a fecal exam to rule out any issues such as parasites or GI upset is best.
