My 7-month-old puppy has soft stool. Should I give her probiotics?

They make canine probiotics you can add to his diet but you may need to change to sensitive stomach formula food temporarily until it gets better. you can also deworm him to make sure that is not a contributing factor. If it continues or you notice blood, vomiting or a decreasing appetite, then he should be checked to see what is causing it

Yes, I suggest you get him a probiotic to add to the food. Use the probiotic with the chicken and rice (no puppy food) for about 4 days and then go back to trying to transition him back to the puppy food. I like this probiotic. I think it is the best. Feed one packet on the food daily. You can add canned pumpkin to add fiber to his diet which may help firm up his stools. You can add 1 tablespoon of canned pumpkin to his meals. You can also add probiotics such as Fortiflora. Metamucil may help some but I would keep her dose very small like around 1 teaspoon twice a day. You could also try to just add a small amount of canned plain pumpkin instead of the Metamucil. I would also consider trying to add in a probiotic and a sensitive stomach diet. I like a few different types of probiotics - propectalin, vetriscience probiotic chews, purina pro plan fortiflora or proviable. If you decide to switch her food, I would transition her from the old food to the new food very slowly over a 2 weeks period. If you haven't had her examined by a vet I would strongly recommend to have her looked at. There are a lot of things that can also cause loose stools like parasites, food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, bacterial infections, giardia, and much more. Hello, I would recommend picking up some probiotics from your vet to help repopulate his gut with good bacteria. Common ones are called Fortiflora and Proviable, but there are other fine brands as well. Also ensure that Chicharon has been dewormed recently. Most areas recommend giving puppies general deworrmer every two weeks during the first four months of life. You can also pick up some prescription canned gastrointestinal food from your vet made to be easy on the belly. Plain rice and pumpkin are also fine choices though. A bit of loose stool is common for dogs in a stressful situation, such as moving to a new home, so this may be a short lived situation. I hope this helps. I typically don’t recommend any specific treatment for soft stool or mild diarrhea as long as there is no blood, vomiting or a decrease in appetite. You could try a probiotic or a bland diet like chicken and rice (as long as there are no dietary restrictions) for a few days. I don’t recommend Pepto or Imodium for dogs, and while pumpkin won’t hurt in my experience it doesn’t help much. If the diarrhea lasts more than 3 days or you see other symptoms I’d recommend seeing your vet.
