My dog has a pink rash and hair loss around his eyes. What to do?

I am so sorry to hear that Buffy is experiencing these problems with her eye. Rashes around the eye are often caused by an eye infection. This is more likely if you also notice, redness, swelling, or discharge from the eye. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Buffy to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Buffy to scratch or rub her eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly, and can result in blindness, I would have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. Ouch! That looks uncomfortable. There are a few potential causes for JJ's eyes issues. The first could be pain or inflammation of the actual eyeball, and JJ could be rubbing his eyes and irritating the skin. There is a mange mite called Demodex that canal so cause reddening of the skin around the eyes. There are also a few other inflammatory or infectious things that can cause this as well. If he is not back to normal in 48 hours, or if it appears to get worse, I think the best thing for JJ would be to have an exam with a veterinarian. Mange mites can easily be diagnosed in the clinic and treatment can be started right away before it gets worse!

This looks to me like a demodex mite infection which can happen in puppies and may clear on its own but if Mia is an adult, this will need to be treated by a veterinarian. Demodex mites are normally kept in check by the immune system but if the immune system is not functing as it should for whatever reason, the demodex mites can take over and cause hair loss around the eyes, head, and limbs. Demodex mites can be diagnosed by a veterinarian through a skin scraping. Mia will need a special medication for this in order to resolve the infection. This could be a beginning outbreak of a demodex mite infection. Usually dogs with Demodicosis have it from birth, however a healthy dog can fight it to the point where it does not cause symptoms. If the dog then happens to be a bit ill, or if the immune system is challenged, the demodex mites multiply and typically cause skin signs around the eyes, face and nose. You should have this examined by a vet . It is relatively easy to get rid of demodex nowadays (an off-license use of Bravecto usually kills them permanently), but it is also necessary to find the underlying condition that caused the mites to proliferate.

It looks as though Mickey could possibly be dealing with a skin infection or skin mites. I would recommend you take him to your veterinarian for a workup of this to diagnose it appropriately so that the most effective treatment can be prescribed. Mickey will likely need to go on a course of oral antibiotics and a topical ointment to treat this if it is a skin infection and if it is skin mites (demodex) he would need to go on a course of a medication that kills the mites. Hair loss in that area is generally due to allergies, mites or less likely and autoimmune disease. You can try giving Shadow an over the counter antihistamine to see if it helps. Wipe his eyes out daily to keep them clean. If he is rubbing the eyes, put an elizabethan collar on him to protect them. If you are not seeing any improvement, or if he is getting worse, I would recommend a vet visit. Taking care of things early is much better. I hope this helps Shadow.

It looks like an infection around the eyelid. This can happen if the eye has been excessively moist lately. The other common cause of this hair loss around the eye is a mite known as Demodex. This is normally seen in puppies. Sport looks like he's a senior, so it's less likely, but still possible. The cause of the swelling can usually be identified by a veterinarian. They can look for the mite and treat for infection. The vet will also be able to give medication that will take down the swelling, which is much needed now. For now, it's best if you can flush the area with saline. You can find this at the local pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush for 15 seconds twice a day. This will give some relief and help to treat/prevent infection. I recommend taking Sport to the vet within the next few days to keep this from getting worse.
