My dog has a rash and peeling skin around her eyes. What should I do?

It does appear that this is more a problem with the skin around the eyes rather than the eye itself. This is commonly seen with demodex (https://mobile.petcoach.co/amp/article/demodectic-mange) infestations in juvenile dogs. It is less common with older dogs and is more of a concern with older dogs. In a puppy, these infestations will resolve on their own after a couple of months. Some require treatment with an antiparasitic. If Bear is an adult, then he will need treatment. It's also possible that this is infected by yeast or bacteria, so it's best to have a vet evaluate him to make a diagnosis. For now, it's good to flush the area with saline for 1-2 minutes three times a day. If it is getting worse, then he probably needs professional treatment to keep it from getting too bad. Hi and thanks for your post! I would recommend getting a diagnosis first from her veterinarian before using any over the counter medications or creams. Hair loss around the eyes may be due to a fungal infection, bacterial infection, or mites. Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with a fungal culture and a skin scraping. I would recommend Baby Girl visit her vet soon to have the possibilities above ruled out so a diagnosis can be made and she can receive the most appropriate treatment from her veterinarian. Some skin creams can be irritating to the skin or may make matters worse depending on what the underlying cause is, so getting a prescription medication from her vet is recommended. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. This could also be due to something like mites and that can be easily determined with an exam and basic cytology which your veterinarian can perform. There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch. 

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. 

Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). 

If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests.

 Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It looks as though Mickey could possibly be dealing with a skin infection or skin mites. I would recommend you take him to your veterinarian for a workup of this to diagnose it appropriately so that the most effective treatment can be prescribed. Mickey will likely need to go on a course of oral antibiotics and a topical ointment to treat this if it is a skin infection and if it is skin mites (demodex) he would need to go on a course of a medication that kills the mites. We call this superficial pyoderma. For these, I recommend topical therapy and skin supplementation. If after 10-14 days there is no improvement with this approach, I recommend visiting the veterinarian and having the vet take a look at Po so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I suspect this could be secondary to demodex, which is a type of skin mite. There is likely also a bacterial skin infection that needs to be treated due to the potential primary mite infection. Those spots on Mala could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Mala wear an elizabethan collar at all times.
