My dog has a red eye and is losing fur around it. What should I do?

Hi I have a dog he has scholiosis and right now his eye is red and had less fur aroundhis eye I was wondering if you know what we can use to get rid of it if you do can you please contact me and tell me what to use for him and can you please tell us what's wrong with him

Thank you for your question! Judging from the pictures, the area is reddened, inflamed and the hair has fallen out. It looks as though Mickey could possibly be dealing with a skin infection or skin mites. I would recommend you take him to your veterinarian for a workup of this to diagnose it appropriately so that the most effective treatment can be prescribed. Mickey will likely need to go on a course of oral antibiotics and a topical ointment to treat this if it is a skin infection and if it is skin mites (demodex) he would need to go on a course of a medication that kills the mites. I'm sorry Mickey isn't feeling well. I would be worried about the surface of his eye. If he scratched it, it could be painful and that would cause him to rub the fur off. If not, I would still be worried about the hair loss being from something itchy and he could cause trauma to the eye. In that case, we need to rule out a mite or allergic reaction. I recommend seeing a vet soon to make sure the eye surface is ok and go from there. Good luck and kisses to Mickey!

Some possible causes are allergies, increased discharge from that eye which is causing skin irritation or increased rubbing of that eye. I would recommend an appointment with your Vet to evaluate the eye for discomfort, which would cause increased tearing. If allergies I tend to recommend a steroid taper, eye ointment and antihistamines.

I am sorry to hear about Mickey! A photo of the area would help us better answer your question. Some sores can develop from things like a small wound or insect bite but others can be from bacterial or fungal infection or more. You can clean the area with mild soap or Hibiclens (available at most pet stores) and apply a topical antibiotic ointment. If your dog is licking at the area he may need an e-collar (the lampshade shaped collars) to stop this until it heals. My dog has a raw, red patch under its eye. Is it a hot spot or mites?

Poor Sandy. That area looks really irritated. Certainly mites can cause hair loss around the eye, but we normally see hair loss around both eyes without any redness or moisture (which it appears that Sandy has). It also appears that Sandy has some crusting along the inside of the area as well. It may be more likely that he has a bacterial skin infection called a hot spot (https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2714) that results from an overgrowth of normal bacteria on the skin. Your veterinarian can perform a couple of simple skin tests to determine if Sandy has any evidence of mites, if we are dealing with a bacterial infection of the skin or if there is another problem. That may require looking at a sample under the microscope. Then they can help you determine the best treatment for him since we have to be careful treating the skin around the eye. Good luck! My dog has hair loss around eyes and black skin. How to help?

Oh dear, poor Gidget! Some of the most common causes of hair loss and black discoloration of the skin around the eyes include allergies, ringworm, and mange. Skin discoloration can occur as a result of chronic irritation and inflammation of the skin. If Gidget is scratching at her face or rubbing it on the ground, I recommend putting an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further hair loss and also to prevent injury to her eyes that could occur from her scratching/rubbing. Otherwise, the best thing that you can do is to take her to her vet for an exam. The vet may need to perform a skin scrape (to check for the presence of the mites that cause mange) or a fungal culture (to check for ringworm). Based upon their exam and test findings, they will be able to prescribe the best medication for Gidget, whether it is an antifungal, anti-parasitic, antibiotic, or anti-inflammatory medication. My dog's eye is red, swollen, and losing hair. What's wrong?

It looks like an infection around the eyelid. This can happen if the eye has been excessively moist lately. The other common cause of this hair loss around the eye is a mite known as Demodex. This is normally seen in puppies. Sport looks like he's a senior, so it's less likely, but still possible. The cause of the swelling can usually be identified by a veterinarian. They can look for the mite and treat for infection. The vet will also be able to give medication that will take down the swelling, which is much needed now. For now, it's best if you can flush the area with saline. You can find this at the local pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush for 15 seconds twice a day. This will give some relief and help to treat/prevent infection. I recommend taking Sport to the vet within the next few days to keep this from getting worse.

Why is my dog rubbing his red, puffy eyes and losing hair around them?

Poor guy. Your pet Creed likely has an eye infection, which is commonly caused by a scratch on the cornea. I would recommend taking him to a vet soon to have this tested and treated with prescription eye ointment. You can do a salt water warm compress on the outside lid for 5 mins or so for tonight and then try and see if any places are open tomorrow for care. If not, then I would consider taking Creed to an after hours clinic or ER to get this addressed quickly so that there is further damage to the cornea. Most pets however do well as long as the eye is treated within 48 hrs of presentation. I hope that Creed's eye issues resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.

My dog has a pink rash and hair loss around his eyes. What to do?

It does appear that this is more a problem with the skin around the eyes rather than the eye itself. This is commonly seen with demodex (https://mobile.petcoach.co/amp/article/demodectic-mange) infestations in juvenile dogs. It is less common with older dogs and is more of a concern with older dogs. In a puppy, these infestations will resolve on their own after a couple of months. Some require treatment with an antiparasitic. If Bear is an adult, then he will need treatment. It's also possible that this is infected by yeast or bacteria, so it's best to have a vet evaluate him to make a diagnosis. For now, it's good to flush the area with saline for 1-2 minutes three times a day. If it is getting worse, then he probably needs professional treatment to keep it from getting too bad. My dog has a rash and peeling skin around her eyes. What should I do?

Hi there and thanks for posting! This looks to me like a demodex mite infection which can happen in puppies and may clear on its own but if Mia is an adult, this will need to be treated by a veterinarian. Demodex mites are normally kept in check by the immune system but if the immune system is not functing as it should for whatever reason, the demodex mites can take over and cause hair loss around the eyes, head, and limbs. Demodex mites can be diagnosed by a veterinarian through a skin scraping. Mia will need a special medication for this in order to resolve the infection.
