My dog pees inside & hides during storms. Is it a UTI or anxiety?

My dog is a morkie (yorkie/maltese) he recently started peeing in the house again more so when it's raining or storming.. but I've also notice him hiding more.. could he have a uti? And, is there any home remedies I could do instead of taking him to vet? As money is tight atm.

A UTI is always possible, and it's always best to bring him to the vet or bring in a sample of his urine in for testing if you suspect that may be the case and to rule out any more serious health issues.

Stress and anxiety (especially if the storms are bringing thunder) may also be causing him to hide or not want to go outside. Looking into something such as a thundershirt, playing a soothing radio station or talk show, distracting with treats or puzzle toys, and taking him out when there are breaks in the storm may all help him relax a bit. If he is very distraught, talking with your vet to see if medication to help him relax would be useful is another option.

This can be ruled out by submitting a urine sample to be checked for bacteria. UTIs in addition to making pets pee in abnormal locations, may also cause them to be lethargic, anxious, panting, and have a decreased appetite. My house-trained adopted dog peed inside. Is it UTI or stress?

Cujo is such a cutie. Congrats on adopting an adult dog!! If this was a one time event, I would just monitor him. He definitely could just be getting used to his new house and routine. However, if he has any further accidents, if he starts asking to go outside to urinate more frequently, if he strains to urinate at all, or if there is any blood in his urine , I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian right away. They will do a urinalysis to screen for an infection likely and may do other tests based on results such as x-rays to look for bladder stones.

My dog has accidents indoors only when I'm home, not when alone. Why?

I am sorry to hear about your dog! The first step is to have your vet examine him to be sure there isn't a medical reason for this new issue. There are a multitude of issues that can cause urinary accidents, including urinary tract infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, diabetes, and more. If the vet rules out a medical cause you can discuss if this is an anxiety issue or a loss of potty training. Anxiety is sometimes treated with oral medications. In mild cases a pheremone product like the Adaptil collar or diffuser (available online and at some pet stores or vet offices), thundershirts (also online and at stores), and oral supplements like Composure and Zylkene. Pepper's symptoms could be due to a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, a mass, or toxin ingestion. It is important that you have Pepper seen by a veterinarian to help determine the cause of the signs and to start treatment. If you notice her straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and can be life threatening. She may be avoiding going outside due to pain/discomfort associated with urinating, or she may be unable to go, indicating a potential emergency situation.

It could be behavioral but recurrent urinary tract infections can also be common in dogs with Cushing's disease. Another possibility might be that there is something else causing infections like bladder stones or too much skin around her vulva. I think it would be best to recheck with your vet again to see if Skye has another infection before you assume that this is a behavioral problem.

My male Doberman is suddenly peeing indoors. Is it a UTI or behavior?

It's possible that Atlas responding to her hormones, even though he is neutered. However, yes, he could have a urinary tract infection, although they tend to be a bit uncommon in male dogs. The only way to tell for sure would be to have your vet run a urinalysis, and that is absolutely the first thing you should do, since Atlas will need antibiotics if that is the case. He could also have bladder stones, or less likely a prostate problem. Get him checked out ASAP.
