Rescue dogs peeing inside: Are they really house trained or stressed?

Some dogs house break easier than others. Small male dogs can be the hardest to house break. I would recommend to continue treating them as if they are little puppies. Its still important to eliminate the potential to have accidents in the house. Until you are sure they will not longer potty in the house, continue the focus on housebreaking.

Moving house and routine can be very stressful for everyone and it sounds like your dogs have got very confused by the upheaval. I recommend crating them when not directly supervised and only allowing them out into one room at a time after they have been outdoors; a long line (5-10meter leash) may be more helpful than a short walking lead if they are not used to leash walks as it will allow them more independence whilst still being safe and secure. Rehoming through a reputable shelter may be required if you are not able to devote the time to retraining. If previously housebroken they should adapt well once they realise where they are supposed to go

Cujo is such a cutie. Congrats on adopting an adult dog!! If this was a one time event, I would just monitor him. He definitely could just be getting used to his new house and routine. However, if he has any further accidents, if he starts asking to go outside to urinate more frequently, if he strains to urinate at all, or if there is any blood in his urine , I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian right away. They will do a urinalysis to screen for an infection likely and may do other tests based on results such as x-rays to look for bladder stones.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is possible that she could have a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) but that wouldn't explain the stool. I think she isn't house trained. I would block her access to the room she is going in and all other rooms. She should be leash walked every 1-2 hours so you know she is actually going outside. When she goes give her treats, verbal praise and play with her outside for 10 mins. If she doesn't go she should be crated if you can not keep her leashed to you. Then try again. She has to be either crated or leashed to an adult at all times until there are no accidents for 3 months. This includes when you are gone and asleep. All rooms need to be closed and/or gated off. No negative punishment for accidents. All areas that have been soiled need to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner like Nature's Miracle. You can also teach her during these 3 months how to ring a bell to indicate she has to go out. Teaching an adult dog to not eliminate in the house is much harder than a puppy especially with out knowing her full back ground. i wish you the best

Hi there. Adding a new puppy to the household can be stressful for your current dog, so it's common to see housetraining relapses and other issues pop up when this happens. Just to "back to basics" with Poli for now, to remind her where to potty - take her out frequently, praise and reward when she goes to the bathroom outside, and supervise her or keep her crated when you can't watch her in the house. Once she's been accident free for a couple of weeks, you can gradually start relaxing your supervision again and let things get back to normal.

I believe the accidents are associated with the stress from the move. I would suggest trying some of the following techniques; I am very sorry that you are experiencing these issues with your dogs. The key is to helping them feel safe and secure at home, increasing exercise to help with anxiety and also increasing mental stimulation. I am sorry that you are having to go through this! If I read the question correctly.... They were both not having accidents for an entire year and then it started again... That certainly seems strange. The first thing that I like to do is rule out a medical problem, especially in Scooter. Kidney problems, bladder infections, diabetes, Cushings Dz are just a few of the conditions that can cause excess urination. If he has a medical problem and is urinating in the house, your puppy might be just thinking it is ok to urinate in the house. I would try to see if you can figure out if it is small puddles very often or larger puddles. The veterinarian can collect a urine sample and run a urinalysis to help diagnose a problem. They may see something like a low specific gravity (concentration of urine) and need to run blood work. You can also take your puppy in to have a urinalysis done as well. If it is not a medical problem, then you will have to try to re-train them. The puppy will most likely be easier. I would recommend going back to crate training. The places where the accidents have happened have to be cleaned very well. You may need to keep Scooter in a small room with an easy to clean floor when your are gone. Good Luck!
