My rescue dog has indoor accidents. UTI or house training problem?

H, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly if she is is going in the house she still isn't fully house trained. All rooms with doors should be closed and she needs to be gated to be kept in your site. Or she needs to be leashed to an adult until this behavior has stopped. The area she is soiling needs to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner, like Nature's Miracle. She needs to be take out frequently and verbally praised, as well as given treats, when she goes outside. Play with her for 5-10 mins. If she doesn't go outside she is crated or leashed to an adult until you take her out again. This training should go on for 3 months and she can have free reign of the house once there are no accidents for those 3 months. You can have her urine checked for crystals or infection by your Vet and consider having her spayed to see if that helps. I wish you the best!

While it is normal (although frustrating) to have “good” days and “bad” days while house training a puppy, the episodes you describe may be an indication of something more serious, such as a UTI. This is definitely possible if Phoebe is straining to urinate, urinating small amounts, or has reddish colored urine and if you notice her licking her vagina more frequently. If these signs continue, she should definitely be seen by a vet as soon as possible. I hope all is well!

If Jewel is urinating in the house I would recommend bringing her into a veterinarian and have them check a urine sample on her. She may have a urinary tract infection. If she is defecating in the house and it is normal this can be behavioral and I would consider checking a stool sample and crating her until she goes outside again. If it is diarrhea then I would recommend checking a stool sample, putting her on a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and if it doesn't resolve discussed probiotics and medication with your veterinarian. As far as the change in urination, I would certainly have your vet evaluate a urine sample to evaluate for a UTI. It will make housetraining much more difficult (or impossible) if there is something medical going on. So, that could certainly be a reason for the backsliding with his training. You may also check a fecal sample. One of my dogs started pooping in the house at 6 months of age, and we found an intestinal parasite was to blame. If there isn't anything medical going on, then it's time to work on housetaining. It is common that we see a little backslide in housetraining around 6 months of age because as owners we think they are doing well, so we get a little more slack in our training. I recommend going back to square one. Keep Max in a kennel or on a leash in the house so he is under very direct supervision. Take him outside immediately after eating or playing. Go outside with him and reward him for going outside. The longer Max goes in the house, the harder it will be to housetrain him, so put in the time and effort now. I hope that was helpful. Cujo is such a cutie. Congrats on adopting an adult dog!! If this was a one time event, I would just monitor him. He definitely could just be getting used to his new house and routine. However, if he has any further accidents, if he starts asking to go outside to urinate more frequently, if he strains to urinate at all, or if there is any blood in his urine , I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian right away. They will do a urinalysis to screen for an infection likely and may do other tests based on results such as x-rays to look for bladder stones.

The accidents could just be secondary to change in environment and stress. You could keep them in crates while you aren't home and then monitor them closely while you are home. Keep them in the same room as you and don't let them roam your house without supervision. Take them outside frequently and give them praise and treats when they go to the bathroom outside. If you are still having problems in a week or so then they may not have been fully house trained.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! California is only 9 weeks old and house training isn't close to being accomplished yet. I wouldn't house train California to go in the house at all. Some dogs do n ot care if they eliminate in their bedding or not. I would ramp up house training: take her out as often as you can and when she goes outside verbally praise her, give her a yummy treat and play with her outside, teach her how to rings bell to go outside, block all rooms she can go in to to soil, clean all soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle, crate her when you are not home and at night, wake up 1-2 times over night to take her out, have someone come while you are at work to take her out and when you are home she should be leashed to an adult at all times. If she doesn't go when you take her out she should be put in her crate and you should try again 20 mins later. You should do this for 2-3 months with out an accident before you become less strict an allow her access to all rooms in your house unobserved. California is very young and to be 100% house broken at 9 weeks of age isn't normal for any puppy. I hope this helps and I wish you and California the best!
