My dog had parvo, vaccinated. Will she get re-infected by sick dog?

It is unlikely. Parvo, like chicken pox in people, is in a class of viruses that once your get it and your body makes an immune response to it, you cannot get it again. Any other puppy that goes there can be exposed to it through if not adequately vaccinated.

We suspect that dogs that have HAD parvo have a life long immunity but with out measuring his parvo titre we do not know if Nicko is protected. If your friends dog hasn't received it's Parvo/distemper vaccines I would be very hesitant to allow them to interact since Nicko isn't up to date for distemper either. Puppies who have had parvo can shed up to 6 weeks in the stool. Two months is still pretty close to 6 weeks. I do recommend that if you are not vaccinating Niko to have your Vet measure his distemper and parvo titres if you want him to interact with puppies. I wouldn't allow them to play until the puppy has completed it's entire vaccine series. And it has been 3 months since it recovered from parvo, unless titres are measured indicating Nicko is protected. Have a great day

Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. However, if the vaccines were not given by a veterinarian they will not cover treatment. I hope she stays nice and healthy! Thanks for using Pet Coach!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is evidence that once a dog has parvo they are protected for life. But I am hoping that your parents have vaccinated her since she was sick? The vaccine also gets distemper which is also contagious. If your parents have never vaccinated their dog I wouldn't bring Kona over there. Even if she is in the crate the virus is all over the house, where ever the dog went. If their dog is vaccinated then Kona should be fine there. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am sorry about Kyra. Stephanie was exposed to parvo, and survived. She should have a strong immune system to fight off any future infections at this age. She should be immune to parvo. I hope she continues to do well.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Peaches. It is highly unlikely that she has the parvovirus again. She will have immunity from her previous infection as well as the vaccine. There are numerous causes of diarrhea. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian for fecal testing. I hope this information helps!

Hello, parvo is generally a disease of young unvaccinated dogs and older dogs whom are vaccinated very rarely contract the disease. You should clean his environment daily with a dilute bleach solution to reduce the contamination of parvo, especially where Bella used to sleep and places where she may have had diarrhea. Ideally, keep King away from those areas at least until you have cleaned them. If King does contract parvo, which again is highly unlikely, he is most likely to have a very mild form of it due to his vaccinations. Monitor him for any vomiting, diarrhea, or a decreased appetite and have him evaluated by your veterinarian if you do not any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.
