My dog had parvo as a puppy. Can he get it again from a visiting dog?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 11 years and 5 months old | 95 lbs

My 15 year old dog had parvo as a puppy. I have a friend who’s bringing her 11 month old chiuaua for a visit. He had parvo 2 months ago. Is he still shedding the virus and since my dog had parvo when he was little, can he get it again? He’s allergic to almost everything so, the only shot he receives is the rabies shot.

We suspect that dogs that have HAD parvo have a life long immunity but with out measuring his parvo titre we do not know if Nicko is protected. If your friends dog hasn't received it's Parvo/distemper vaccines I would be very hesitant to allow them to interact since Nicko isn't up to date for distemper either. Puppies who have had parvo can shed up to 6 weeks in the stool. Two months is still pretty close to 6 weeks. I do recommend that if you are not vaccinating Niko to have your Vet measure his distemper and parvo titres if you want him to interact with puppies.

I wouldn't allow them to play until the puppy has completed it's entire vaccine series. And it has been 3 months since it recovered from parvo, unless titres are measured indicating Nicko is protected.

It is unlikely. Parvo, like chicken pox in people, is in a class of viruses that once your get it and your body makes an immune response to it, you cannot get it again. Any other puppy that goes there can be exposed to it through if not adequately vaccinated.

The breeder is correct that Edith should avoid contact with other dogs if you do not know their vaccination status, but she can have contact with dogs who are fully vaccinated. Parvovirus can be carried a person's shoes and clothes, which is why the breeder implied avoiding contact with people who have dogs. That being said, as long as the dogs at the home where your father is staying are fully vaccinated, there is no problem with him coming to see you :-)

My dog had a parvo vaccine gap. Is she safe around a new puppy?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first two doses of parvo vaccine were given correctly but the third one was given way too late. It would be safer to give Mocha another dose of parvo vaccine, about 3-4 weeks after the one she just had. That will make sure that she is fully protected and she is not any danger for the new puppy.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should be fine if Zoei is fully vaccinated and you aunt cleaned well after her puppy had Parvo. It is best to use bleach to clean after a dog with parvovirus. If that was done you have very little to worry about. Have a good night!

How to protect my young puppy from parvo and ticks after dog park?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she is playing with healthy vaccinated dogs and is current on her puppy shots then she is unlikely to get parvo. Parvo is transmitted fecal-oral or from fomites (touching objects that have the virus on it). Be sure that Coco gets her DHPP every 3-4 weeks until she gets 2 past 12 weeks. If she has lapsed between vaccines then there is risk. As for tick control she is old enough for Nexgard which is a monthly oral chewable as well as Frontline which is topical. Be sure to start heartworm prevention as well. I wish you the best!

Did I spread Parvo? When can I safely get another puppy after Parvo?

It is not likely you transferred the virus to your friend's dog. The virus will live long in the environment but not on you. If the dog was in your yard or house, then he could have picked it up there. Parvovirus can live up to a year in the outside environment. It is not a good idea to get another puppy now. You can get an older, vaccinated dog but not a puppy. I would wait a minimum of 6 months before you get another puppy but a year would be better/safer.

I'm so glad that Hudson has recovered from Parvo. Unfortunately, Parvovirus can survive in the environment for a prolonged period of time. I am attaching a handout below with specifics about disinfection. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&C=&A=579&SourceID= The inside of your house is considered infected for about a month, but the yard can be considered infected for many months, so I would not recommend any dogs coming to your house unless they are fully vaccinated.
