My dog survived parvo. Is she immune or can she get reinfected?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 76 lbs

Several dogs in my area have died from the parvovirus including my Belgian Malinois / GSD mix (Kyra). Stephanie survived the parvo with little to no veterinary effort. Would Stephanie continually be getting infected or would she be immune at this age of over 1yr and 2 months old?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am sorry about Kyra. Stephanie was exposed to parvo, and survived. She should have a strong immune system to fight off any future infections at this age. She should be immune to parvo. I hope she continues to do well.

You are correct to be worried however, there is not much that you can do at this point. It is also possible that Kyra just did not have a strong enough immune system and that is why the vaccinations did not work. Stephanie may be fine. There is no way to predict.

If I were you, I would vaccinate Stephanie now with just one dose of the parvo vaccine. Get it from your vet where you know the vaccine has been stored and handled properly. If Stephanie gets parvovirus and survives there should be no long term effects.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The best information that we have for Parvo immunity is that puppies are immune from the virus for a very long time. We do not know if the immunity lasts a life time, but unless there is something seriously wrong with the puppies immune system, they should not get the virus again. This does not mean you should stop or skip any vaccinations. Continue with them for the rest of ChaChi's life. Take care.

When dogs survived to Parvovirus usually develops an constant immunity against it which can prevent further reinfection. I would say that the absence of clinical signs would be a way to say that he 100% survived it.

My dog had parvo, vaccinated. Will she get re-infected by sick dog?

Hello, thank you for your question about Hazel. If Hazel has been previously infected and then vaccinated the chance that she could experience a re-infection is very unlikely as she should now have good immunity against this virus. I would recommend keeping Bolt and Hazel separated though while Bolt is sick with parvovirus. Parvovirus makes dogs predisposed to developing other significant infections. My vaccinated dog was exposed to parvo. Is she still susceptible?

Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. However, if the vaccines were not given by a veterinarian they will not cover treatment. I hope she stays nice and healthy! Thanks for using Pet Coach!

My dog survived Parvo, was vaccinated. Now has diarrhea. Is it Parvo?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Peaches. It is highly unlikely that she has the parvovirus again. She will have immunity from her previous infection as well as the vaccine. There are numerous causes of diarrhea. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian for fecal testing. I hope this information helps!

My dog survived parvo. Can he get parvovirus again with diarrhea?

It would be extremely unlikely for a dog that has survived parvovirus to be affected again - the virus provides such excellent immunity that some veterinarians will take serum from recovered dogs to give transfusions to those affected with the disease (although this may or may not help). There are many other diseases that could cause diarrhea with that distinctive parvoviral smell. If the diarrhea is severe I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian who can run some tests to determine what might be causing his diarrhea this time around and start some treatment.
