My puppy had parvo. Can she get it again or is she now immune?

We suspect that dogs that have HAD parvo have a life long immunity but with out measuring his parvo titre we do not know if Nicko is protected. If your friends dog hasn't received it's Parvo/distemper vaccines I would be very hesitant to allow them to interact since Nicko isn't up to date for distemper either. Puppies who have had parvo can shed up to 6 weeks in the stool. Two months is still pretty close to 6 weeks. I do recommend that if you are not vaccinating Niko to have your Vet measure his distemper and parvo titres if you want him to interact with puppies. I wouldn't allow them to play until the puppy has completed it's entire vaccine series. And it has been 3 months since it recovered from parvo, unless titres are measured indicating Nicko is protected. Have a great day

A dog or puppy that has recovered from parvo infection cannnot get infected a second time. Studies have shown immunity lasts at least 3 years, but the pup may be considered immune for the rest of its life due to natural antibodies towards the virus.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am sorry about Kyra. Stephanie was exposed to parvo, and survived. She should have a strong immune system to fight off any future infections at this age. She should be immune to parvo. I hope she continues to do well.

It is unlikely. Parvo, like chicken pox in people, is in a class of viruses that once your get it and your body makes an immune response to it, you cannot get it again. Any other puppy that goes there can be exposed to it through if not adequately vaccinated.

Thanks for using PetCoach. Depending on the severity of the couse of disease, it can take some puppies several weeks to fully recover. Be sure to feed the food her vet recommends and offer small amounts of food frequently. Do not allow her to eat all she wants at one time. Zoe may be contagious to other puppies for up to 3-4 weeks so should be kept away from other dogs and pups. Depending on how she is doing the vet may recommend vaccination anywhere from 1-3 weeks after she starts eating. She cannot contract Parvo again but does need to be vaccinated against other diseases. When dogs survived to Parvovirus usually develops an constant immunity against it which can prevent further reinfection. I would say that the absence of clinical signs would be a way to say that he 100% survived it.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is evidence that once a dog has parvo they are protected for life. But I am hoping that your parents have vaccinated her since she was sick? The vaccine also gets distemper which is also contagious. If your parents have never vaccinated their dog I wouldn't bring Kona over there. Even if she is in the crate the virus is all over the house, where ever the dog went. If their dog is vaccinated then Kona should be fine there. I hope this helps!
