My dog ate steak fat with onion/garlic. Is his fast panting serious?

Jesse should be examined by the veterinarian. The rapid breathing could indicate that she is in pain. Onions can affect the red blood cells and cause destruction of the cells and this can also effect the respiratory and cardiovascular system. I recommend to play it safe and have her examined by her veterinarian quickly. The doctor will need an easy blood test to see the amount t of red blood cells. Treatment will be based upon the physical examine and lab values. Best of luck and I hope she starts feeling better quickly.

It is unlikely that there was enough onion present to cause a problem, but eating that much pizza will likely cause some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. He could also develop pancreatitis. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, isn't wanting to eat, or seems lethargic, please take him to your vet for treatment. In the meantime, withhold for at least 12 hours, then offer small amounts of. a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. Onions will cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells which can result in anemia. If the onions are going to be an issue, it will be a few days before you would see this, and generally would present as decreased appetite and lethargy. If those symptoms are noted, get him in to your vet for bloodwork. This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. Hi, It is true that garlic and garlic products can produce harmful effects in dogs such as anemia. Although, if this was a small amount and since Nova is a large dog, it would be very strange for her to have symptoms. Monitor her and keep an eye on any signs such as lethargy, pale gums, rapid breathing, weakness, jaundice, and dark colored urine. Garlic toxicity may also cause vomiting and diarrhea. If Nova had these signs, you would want to seek veterinary attention soon. But from the information you've provided I don't think you have much cause for concern. Often clinical signs are delayed, starting at about 24 hours and peaking at 72 hours post ingestion. Trying to decrease the amount of toxin absorbed right away is recommended, so if there is a chance that Gucci ate any of the onions then I would suggest bringing him to the vet to have him vomit (if it has been <2 hours) and activated charcoal. Otherwise, monitor him very carefully for signs of lethargy, weakness, a high heart rate, brown/dark urine, brown/dark gums, inappetance, etc. If you see any of these signs bring in Gucci right away to the vet. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Koda! My biggest concern is the butter more than the garlic especially now that she is vomiting. High amounts of fat can cause severe gastro-intestinal upset and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be mild (just vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) to very severe. Garlic causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells causing an anemia. A lot of it probably could cause stomach upset. Since it has been 12 hours and now she is coughing I would get her seen as soon as possible by your Vet. Good luck!

It's definitely possible that he could have some intolerance of this meal. The most common problems to happen are vomiting, or diarrhea. This is usually something that resolves within three days. Pancreatitis and bloat are possibilities, but bloat is not associated with having a rich meal like this. Bloat would cause him to have labored breathing and would be concerning if all he wants to do is lay down. If that's the case, then I would recommend a visit to the vet as soon as possible. If Cedar is still able to walk around and acts somewhat normal, then I would not be too concerned about bloat. For now, it's best to make sure he has plenty of water and let his stomach rest over night. Feed a little less for his morning meal tomorrow and don't feed him if he is vomiting.
