Puppy sniffed onions, now lethargic & breathing heavy. Is it toxic?

Jesse should be examined by the veterinarian. The rapid breathing could indicate that she is in pain. Onions can affect the red blood cells and cause destruction of the cells and this can also effect the respiratory and cardiovascular system. I recommend to play it safe and have her examined by her veterinarian quickly. The doctor will need an easy blood test to see the amount t of red blood cells. Treatment will be based upon the physical examine and lab values. Best of luck and I hope she starts feeling better quickly.

It is unlikely that there was enough onion present to cause a problem, but eating that much pizza will likely cause some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. He could also develop pancreatitis. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, isn't wanting to eat, or seems lethargic, please take him to your vet for treatment. In the meantime, withhold for at least 12 hours, then offer small amounts of. a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. Onions will cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells which can result in anemia. If the onions are going to be an issue, it will be a few days before you would see this, and generally would present as decreased appetite and lethargy. If those symptoms are noted, get him in to your vet for bloodwork. Keep an eye on Loki for the next few days because, as you already know, onions can be very dangerous in these little guys. If you notice that Loki seems more lethargic or tired than normal, take him to your vet right away. Once there your vet can perform a lab test (a CBC) to make sure the onions did not cause a problem.

Please be careful giving dogs too much fat as that can cause pancreatitis and pancreatitis can be severe. I wouldn't advise ever giving straight fat to dogs. Plus he is very young to get foods like that. Signs of pancreatitis are: belly pain, lethargy, vomit and/or diarrhea, not eating. The fat, onions, garlic can cause stomach and intestinal upset as well which would look very similar to pancreatitis. It is hard to say if the panting he is doing is related to what he was fed, panting can be a sign of pain. But puppies can breath fast when they are sleeping. If the panting continues or any of the other above signs occur he should be taken tot the vet. i wish you the best!

Muchacho sounds like he definitely sick. Just like humans, pets can vomit and not feel well for many reasons. The illness could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn't have, bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia) or even something more severe like organ dysfunction or intestinal blockage. Onions are toxic to pets. The low body temperature and shivering a signs of serious illness. Also given the fact that he is vomiting and has no appetite, this could also be indicative of a serious illness. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today. If this is serious, the sooner he gets treatment, the better. Remember to take in a stool sample just in case. He may need some diagnostics like bloodwork or x-rays.
