My dog ate cooked onion. She's bloated, gassy, and breathing fast. Is it serious?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Onions can be very toxic and cause damage to the red blood cells. Often clinical signs are delayed, starting at about 24 hours and peaking at 72 hours post ingestion. Trying to decrease the amount of toxin absorbed right away is recommended, so if there is a chance that Gucci ate any of the onions then I would suggest bringing him to the vet to have him vomit (if it has been <2 hours) and activated charcoal. Otherwise, monitor him very carefully for signs of lethargy, weakness, a high heart rate, brown/dark urine, brown/dark gums, inappetance, etc. If you see any of these signs bring in Gucci right away to the vet. Oh no! Poor Waffle! Decreased energy, pale gums (due to anemia), increased heart rate/breathing rate, vomiting, and a reduced appetite are all signs of potential onion toxicity. Poor Juana! While it's good she threw up the onion, I'm concerned about her breathing heavily. Because her health is so vital to keeping her puppies alive, I do think she needs to see a vet. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. In order to get a toxic amount of onions, a normal sized Jack Russel Terrier would have to have eaten about a whole onion. If it was just a few pieces I wouldn't be too concerned, however if it was a large amount I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test to see if her red cells are affected. Otherwise, I would watch her for vomiting and diarrhea, as mold from old food contains toxins that can cause severe gastritis, as well as tremors and seizures. If you are unsure of how much she had, I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test. If you look at her gums and they look brown instead of pink, or she has any trouble breathing or is weak and lethargic, then this is very very serious and you have to get her to a vet right away. Onion has to see a vet for this. She sounds very congested, and she likely need medication from the vet to treat her symptoms. I am concerned that you say she can't breathe, and due to that, I think she should see a vet immediately.

If Dallas is calm now, keep an eye on her. Should she have another one of these episodes, yes take her into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, call her vet in the morning to make her an appointment for a health check.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't worry about the onions and garlic per se. Please be careful giving dogs too much fat as that can cause pancreatitis and pancreatitis can be severe. I wouldn't advise ever giving straight fat to dogs. Plus he is very young to get foods like that. Signs of pancreatitis are: belly pain, lethargy, vomit and/or diarrhea, not eating. The fat, onions, garlic can cause stomach and intestinal upset as well which would look very similar to pancreatitis. It is hard to say if the panting he is doing is related to what he was fed, panting can be a sign of pain. But puppies can breath fast when they are sleeping. If the panting continues or any of the other above signs occur he should be taken tot the vet. i wish you the best!
