My dog with pancreatitis vomits after amoxicillin. Should I stop it?

Vomiting can be caused by many different conditions including gastritis (upset stomach from eating something like garbage, raw food, bones, or dead animals in the park, etc.), pancreatitis, obstructions in the gut, as well as kidney/liver/metabolic diseases. Very often amoxicillin will do nothing to help the vomiting, and can make it worse as antiboitics are hard on the guts. I recommend feeding a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals (4-6 meals a day of 1/2 cup size meals). If the vomiting continues, or if Mui is lethargic or weak, then I would see a vet right away. If the vomiting stops and she is eating and acting normally then she is likely OK. I would not give any amoxicillin. Best of luck with Mui.

It is unlikely that the pancreatitis is caused by antibiotics, but we can give you more specific informations if you tell us the name of the antibiotic. Reglan is a an anti-emetic drug which will prevent any further vomiting episode and possibly promote gastrointestinal (first tract) motility. This is a common medication to give. It would be best to keep him on low fat diet (Chappie would be a good commercial diet for this purpose) for a but longer (at least two weeks after all the signs are resolved). There is a chance that this is related to the medication and so should stop within about 12 hours of stopping the medication. If your puppy is still vomiting after that then I would recommend taking her in to be examined and given medication to stop the vomiting. Carpeofen is not recommended with pancreatitis as it can make the condition worse, in some severe cases steroids can be prescribed. i would recommend adding a few medications to what she is getting: Cerenia, Famotidine, Omeprazole. these 3 can help significantly. i would also recommend switching from Amoxicillin to Metronidazole. she of course needs to be on a special prescription low fat diet such as Royal Canin gastrointestinal low fat.

If Bella just started vomiting since starting the Amoxicillin, I would stop giving her the medication and schedule a recheck with your vet. She likely is just sensitive to this medication and will do fine on another one. Try offering her something easily digestible to eat like plain boiled chicken and rice. If Pixi is being treated for pancreatitis, this vomiting could still be related to it. Pancreatitis makes a dog very sick. I think she needs to see a vet immediately, as she sounds very sick. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

It is possible that she could be having a sensitivity to the antibiotic or this could be another complication to her upset tummy. I would make sure you are feeding her a complete meal then wait 15-20 minutes befor giving her the antibiotics. Also you may want to try feeding her only plain chicken (no bones) and rice as This is bland and easy on the tummy for recovery. If This doesn’t help then I would talk to your vet about a recheck. Your vet may want to give her an anti-nausea medicine, change her antibiotics or take X-rays if indicated. I hope this helps!
