My dog is throwing up after antibiotics for bloody diarrhea, why?

I hate to hear that Jersey is not feeling well. I do think the continuing diarrhea and regurgitation do indicate that she did not respond like she should have to the antibiotic. No knowing her full history, its hard to say what could be causing it but in puppies, parasites including Giardia are very common. You can also see infections in the GI tract, chronic foreign in bodies, organ dysfunction and food allergy as other causes. If Jersey is acting normal, has a good energy level and normal pink gums, I would recommend to make an appointment with her normal veterinarian to discuss next steps. The doctor may recommend a special diet, bloodwork and/or radiographs to start trying to figure out what is going on. She or he may also recommend special parasite testing depending on where you live. Feed Jersey small amounts of boiled white breast chicken meat and white rice. Make sure she is drinking water and keep her in a cool, comfortable area. If Jersey seems to be uncomfortable, has pale gums, seems weak or in distress, then you should go to the emergency clinic. Use your best judgement. I hope she starts feeling better asap!

Anesthesia can cause these symptoms along with the stress of the stay but that antibiotic can be a factor also. If he is eating and drinking fine with only a small amount of blood at the end of the BM then you can monitor for anything further. If it is diarrhea with blood through out then I would get him seen. You can always try boiled chicken and rice as this is bland and easy to digest. You may need to add canine probiotics while in antibiotics. You may want to talk to your vet about a different one that is easier on the stomach

Antibiotics and urinary tract infections themselves can both cause nausea/vomiting. However, as you finished the antibiotics 5 days ago, it is less likely that the vomiting is due to the UTI antibiotics. If she has recently gotten table food or had access to food from the garbage, she may have a condition called pancreatitis caused by a sudden high fat meal that may cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. A trip to your veterinarian for screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney/pancreas issue as the cause of the vomiting, subcutaneous fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication (cerenia), and a prescription intestinal diet is advised. If you are not able to get an appointment immediately, I recommend feeding only a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken (with no regular kibble) for the next 3-5 days. Sometimes this alone helps resolve the symptoms of mild gastroenteritis. Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It sounds as though Pachu is not tolerating the antibiotics. I would contact the veterinarian to discuss other options for treating the skin infection. If the skin infection is not bad, then the use of oral antibiotics may not be needed. I always try to treat mild skin infections with topical therapy alone and get very good success in doing so. If Pachu is dehydrated from the vomiting / diarrhea he may need hydration therapy to help with that. I hope this helps!

Poor Mac! I recommend to call his veterinarian who may ask to see him again or may recommend medications. It possible the antibiotic has upset his tummy but it’s also possible something else is going on. You can switch his diet to boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice for the next few days. If he continues to be sick, he should see his veterinarian. I am So sorry to hear that Russel has been so unwell. I am happy to hear his respiratory issues are resolved. It is possible that the same infection has affected his gastrointestnal tract, that the antibiotics themselves have upset his natural gut flora, or even that it’s all coincidence and Russel simply ate something he should have. From what you are describing, a liquid bowel movement which has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Russell has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in dogs, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, stress, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed these issues for a day I would continue to monitor Russell at home. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice and plenty of fresh water. You can also add cooked mashed skinless sweet potatoes to help with the diarrhoea, a dog formulated probiotic, and low sodium chicken broth to help with fluid intake. If the episodes continue, if Russel becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Him to see his vet immediately. I'm sorry to hear that Nicco hasn't been feeling well, but I'm glad to hear that you've already sought veterinary care. It is most commonly recommended to give antibiotics with food since this will lessen the chance of developing an upset stomach with vomiting and diarrhea as a side effect of the antibiotics. In this case, however, Nicco is already having diarrhea and experiencing a loss of appetite. It should be just fine to give him the antibiotics (metronidazole or Flagyl, I assume, given the bloody diarrhea) without food until he is eating normally again. You can also ask your vet about offering Nicco a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice since he is refusing to eat the Royal Canin gastrointestinal low fat diet. If your veterinarian approves this plan, a typical rule of thumb is to feed 1 cup of a 50:50 chicken/rice mixture for every 10 pounds of body weight per day, divided into 3-4 smaller meals. If Nicco is still refusing to eat, experiencing bloody diarrhea, or begins to vomit by tomorrow, I recommend calling your vet since he may need to be reevaluated with additional diagnostic testing or supportive treatments.
